J.D. Martinez 'perfect fit' with Arizona Diamondbacks in MLB free agency
There are still some prominent MLB free agents without teams for the 2024 season and some MLB writers think one of them would be a great fit with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
That free agent? J.D. Martinez.
MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan had a story listing a strong fit for the Top 11 remaining MLB free agents and listed the Diamondbacks as the best fit for Martinez.
Why? He wrote: "Coming off a surprising World Series appearance, the D-backs haven’t rested on their laurels this offseason. Arizona has already made several major moves, acquiring third baseman Eugenio Suárez in a trade and left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez in free agency before re-signing outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. But the club shouldn’t stop there. While no one expects the D-backs to match the spending habits of some of the other teams in the NL West, we’d like to see them stretch their budget to add one more heavy hitter to their lineup. Arizona’s DH production was among the worst in the game in 2023, making Martinez an ideal target. The veteran slugger isn’t quite the threat he was back in 2017, when he had a memorable stint with the D-backs following a trade from Detroit to Arizona, but his 134 OPS+ would have tied him with Corbin Carroll for the team lead last season."

Martinez was part of the Diamondbacks' memorable late-season 2017 run after the DBacks traded for the slugger from the Detroit Tigers.
Martinez played in 62 games for Arizona that season, hitting .302 with 29 home runs.
He signed with the Red Sox after that season, where he played through 2022. Martinez spent last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
On Tuesday, former MLB general manager Dan Duquette said the Diamondbacks were the "perfect" landing spot for Martinez in free agency.
“I think it’s a perfect fit,” Duquette told MLB Network Radio. “They know him. Obviously, the front office has had him before, Mike Hazen, that group, Torey (Lovullo) had him as well. To me, that’s the best fit if they’re willing to give him two years there.
“I think that’s a really good position for him.”

Martinez, 36, hit .271 last season with 33 home runs with the Dodgers. He could be a great designated hitter for Arizona, but the team could have company in trying to acquire the veteran.
The New York Mets and Los Angeles Angels and other teams that have been linked to Martinez this offseason.
Some other sites have also linked Martinez to Arizona in free agency, with Bleacher Report predicting Arizona would land the slugger and USA TODAY Sports reporting that the DBacks were '"hopeful" to land the DH.
The New York Post also reported that the Diamondbacks were a "possibility" for Martinez.
ESPN also listed the Diamondbacks as a potential home for Martinez.
