Iowa guard Caitlin Clark breaks D1 NCAA basketball scoring record vs. Ohio State. What to know

Ohio State women's basketball witnessed history in its final game of the 2023-24 regular season.

With a free throw late in the second quarter against the Buckeyes Sunday, Iowa guard Caitlin Clark broke the all-time men's and women's basketball scoring record set by Pete Maravich from 1967-70.

"Not really," Clark told FOX Sports when asked if she realized she broke the record with a free throw. "But when they announced it and everybody screamed, that's when I knew. Pretty cool. Good half for us. I think we could do a little better job on defense, clean it up a little bit. But proud of our girls. They're fighting. They're a really good team. They're going to give everything they've got."

Clark had 18 points in the first half making six of 14 attempts from the field, and four of 10 from 3-point range.

In three seasons at LSU, Maravich scored 3,667 points with a 43.8% field goal percentage. Clark entered Sunday's game 18 points away from breaking Maravich's record.

Clark passed former Kansas star Lynette Woodard for the major-college women's basketball scoring record Wednesday with a 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter against Minnesota.

Clark announced Thursday that she would enter the WNBA draft instead of playing a fifth season at Iowa. Clark is expected to be the No. 1 pick by the Indiana Fever and would join a roster that includes former Ohio State guard Kelsey Mitchell.

Ohio State was not a finalist to land Clark.

Clark, a West Des Moines, Iowa, native and a top-five national recruit in the 2020 class behind players such as Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese, held offers from program such as Texas, Oregon, Oregon State, Duke, Florida and Drake.

But Clark chose Iowa over finalists Notre Dame and Iowa State.

Will Catilin Clark face Ohio State again in 2023-24 season?

The next possible meeting between the two teams would come in the Big Ten tournament final.

Iowa would be on the opposite side of Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament bracket as both a No. 2 or No. 3 seed.

Does Caitlin Clark have the most points in college basketball history?

No. According to the Associated Press, Clark is still chasing University of Heath Sciences and Pharmacy fifth-year senior Grace Beyer, who had 3,842 points as of Feb. 26.

The women's all-time college scoring record was set by Pearl Moore who scored 4,061 points.
