Insider: Ranking the 10 best Indiana girls basketball regional matchups
The regional round of the 2023-24 IHSAA girls basketball state tournament is slated for Saturday. Here are my picks for the weekend's 10-best offerings.
The Scorers Table: Previewing Class A-3A regional finals
10. Greensburg (21-4) vs. Scottsburg (21-4), 4 p.m. at Charlestown (3A)
It's been a historic season for Scottsburg, which claimed its first sectional title since 2012 with its 21st win of the season — most since 1990 (sixth-most all-time). It was led by Carrie Hiler, Ellie Richardson and Lalia Powell in the sectional final. Regional foe Greensburg has also won 21 games (including at New Palestine on Jan. 23) and is here for the fourth time since 2018. Leah West, Mylie Wilkison, Aly Powers and Claire Larrison are all scoring in double figures.
Sectionals: No changing of the guard — yet. Some teams on the rise and more.
Insider: Here are the biggest surprises from sectionals week
9. Sheridan (19-5) vs. Northeastern (19-6), 4 p.m. at Southwestern (2A)
Juniors Kenzie Garner, Cecilia Timme and Nova Cross attempt to lead Sheridan to its first-ever regional championship against a Northeastern outfit that's hit eight 3s in back-to-back games. The Knights are led by Adysson Kircher, Addisen Mastriano and Ava Mikesell. Neither team encountered much resistance during sectionals, so they should be well-rested and ready to roll.
8. Pike (12-14) vs. Plainfield (17-7), 7 p.m. at Decatur Central (4A)
The Red Devils commanded folks' attention during sectionals with a dominating win over Roncalli and a dramatic come-from-behind triumph over Franklin Central. They'll be underdogs once again vs. Plainfield, which has not won a regional game since 1998. The next wave of Central Indiana standouts will be on display here with Pike freshman Saniya Smith and sophomore Komari Booker, and Plainfield freshman Hannah Menser and sophomore Berkeley Williams among the participants.
More: Plainfield led 15-0, never looked back in sectional final blowout win
7. McCutcheon (21-4) vs. Homestead (22-4), 1 p.m. at Marion (4A)
Want to get an early look at two potential IndyStar Miss Basketball candidates? Go to Marion. McCutcheon's Lillie Graves, the state's top-ranked freshman (2027), vs. Homestead's Myah Epps, one of the state's best sophomores (2026). Graves put up 18 points and eight assists to help the Mavs beat Harrison on Saturday; Epps, who was recently offered by Purdue, dropped 22 points to spark an upset of host Columbia City and secure a sixth consecutive sectional title.
6. Eastbrook (23-2) vs. Lapel (22-4), 4 p.m. at Lapel (2A)
When these teams last met, Lapel escaped with a two-point win to advance to semistate for the first time since 2007. Both teams were hit by graduation, but the key contributors from that specific game are all back: Lapel's Madelyn Poynter and Laniah Wills; Eastbrook's Olivia Howell and Sophia Morrison. Expect a similarly dramatic finish on the Bulldogs' home floor.
5. Indian Creek (21-4) vs. Bishop Chatard (18-8), 4 p.m. at Greencastle (3A)
A postseason rubber match! Neither Chatard's 2022 regional championship win nor Indian Creek's 2023 semistate semifinal win were particularly close, but this year's installment should be much closer. IU commit Faith Wiseman in the paint vs. a super-physical Trojan outfit led by Anna Caskey and Olivia Berzai will be the main storyline, but don't sleep on IC's Lauren Foster or Chatard's Addison Duncan, both of whom are seniors.
4. SB Washington (19-4) vs. Lake Central (23-4), 5 p.m. at LaPorte (4A)
A rematch of last year's semistate semifinal stunner (LC beat the nationally ranked Panthers) featuring two similarly talented, but uniquely constructed teams. Led by the junior trio of Kira Reynolds (17 ppg, 11 rpg, 4 apg and 7 bpg — seven blocks per game!), Ryiah Wilson (15 ppg, 5 spg, 4 apg) and Monique Mitchell (13 ppg, 2 spg, 2 bpg), Washington is stacked but relatively young beyond its stars. Lake Central doesn't have the same firepower, but it's well-balanced with Aniyah Bishop, Vanessa Wimberly, Riley Milausnic, Ayla Krygier and Nadia Clayton all averaging 8-10 ppg. The Indians average about six 3s per game.
SBW beat Lake Central, 50-47, in the third game of the season.
3. Benton Central (25-3) vs. Norwell (20-4), 4 p.m. at Caston (3A)
Similarly battle-tested teams collide in regionals for the second time in three years. Benton Central rallied to beat West Lafayette in the sectional championship game behind a big night by senior Sarah Gick and clutch buckets by Rachel Tolen and Sienna Foster; Norwell cruised through its tournament, but prepared for state with games against a mostly 4A schedule that included Warsaw, Homestead, Columbia City, Lawrence North, Snider and Valparaiso, among others. Seniors Kennedy Fuelling and Makenzie Fuess lead the Knights.
2. Noblesville (16-8) vs. Fort Wayne Snider (22-2), 4 p.m. at Marion (4A)
Make no mistake, both teams are very talented and balanced beyond their two stars. But the main headline is the battle between potential 2024 IndyStar Miss Basketball candidates: Reagan Wilson (Noblesville) and Jordyn Poole (Snider). The Iowa State-bound Wilson (17 ppg, 3 apg, 3 spg) went for a season-high 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting to beat Snider on Dec. 28; the Purdue-bound Poole has not lost since and is averaging over 17 points, four assists and three steals on the year. Two star point guards duking it out with their high school careers on the line.
'We love this stage.' Noblesville conquers Sectional 8 gauntlet for 3rd time in 4 years
1. Center Grove (25-1) vs. Bedford North Lawrence (20-4), 1 p.m. at BNL (4A)
Another likely 2024 IndyStar Miss Basketball candidate fighting to extend her season. Alabama commit Chloe Spreen has been brilliant this season for BNL (21 ppg, 7 rpg, 3 apg), but it was a career-high performance and lights-out defensive effort by Madisyn Bailey that keyed the defending state champion's upset of Jennings County last Saturday. Center Grove, which boasts a very balanced lineup (Audrey Annee, Aubrie Booker, Ava Grant, Lily Bischoff and Rachel Wirts) averages about 11 more points per game and is shooting nine percentage points better than last season. I'll delve into the matchup proper when it's time to make a prediction, but neither team makes many mistakes. We should be in for a wild one here, folks.
Bonus pick!
If looking for a quality Class A regional, your best bet is probably…
North Central (Farmersburg) (17-10) vs. Bethesda Christian (18-5), 7 p.m. at Greencastle
Unlike last year, BC standout Kenzie Fulks (20 ppg, 5 apg, 4 spg) is healthy entering the state tournament. She's had some wild performances during her career and now she alongside fellow seniors Sydney Goodin and Jayla Ferguson will try to lead the Patriots to their first-ever regional crown. They'll have to overcome a North Central team that averages around 54 ppg and is led by Jalyn Davidson and Shelby Seay. This one should come down to the wire.
