'The recovery journey starts now': Stefan Wilson optimistic after surgery on fractured vertebrae
Stefan Wilson was in "good spirits" following Wednesday night surgery on a fractured vertebrae suffered in a post-qualifying Indianapolis 500 practice crash, his team said in a statement.
"On Wednesday night (May 24) at IU Health Methodist Hospital, Stefan underwent surgery with a T10-T12 Posterior fusion and internal fixation of the fracture," Dreyer and Reinbold and Cusick Motorsports said.
Wilson, 33, suffered a fracture of the 12th thoracic vertebrae Monday in a crash with Katherine Legge. He has been at IU Health Methodist Hospital since. Legge was uninjured, and her car is being repaired to compete in the race.
Wilson posted a video Thursday morning from his hospital bed, thanking doctors, his team and fans. He said he's eager to start walking later Thursday and prepare for the 2024 Indy 500.
"The recovery journey starts now," he said.

Wilson had qualified 25th for Sunday's race. He has competed in four Indy 500s, with a best finish of 15th in 2018.
Graham Rahal is replacing Wilson in the No. 24 car for Sunday's race. Rahal is the lead driver for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, but he was bumped from the field in last weekend's Last Chance Qualifying session.
