Indiana women’s basketball: Teri Moren unloads on ‘unacceptable’ performance in win

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana women’s basketball coach Teri Moren used words like “lackluster,” “unacceptable,” “undisciplined” and “disappointing” in a blistering critique of her team’s performance in a 82-60 win over Brown on Monday night.

That was just in her two-minute opening statement.

The No. 24 Hoosiers (1-0; 0-0 Big Ten) led for all but 24 seconds in the season-opener, but Moren was fuming over a series of mental breakdowns and poor defensive effort.

“A win, sure,” Moren said, shaking her head. “This performance tonight will not win you any Big Ten game."

Teri Moren unloads on IU’s defense: ‘Those are the things that are going to get your ass beat’

Moren couldn’t hide her disgust when she looked at the box score after the game and the number she kept coming back to throughout her press conference was Brown’s 11 made 3-pointers.

It was only the seventh time IU has given up double-digit 3-pointers against a non-conference opponent since Moren took over in 2014-15.

“It's just unacceptable to me,” Moren said. “It just is and so that bothers me. It bothers me that we don't have more pride.”

While Brown came into the game with a reputation of being a high-volume 3-pointing team under coach Monique Leblanc — the Bears averaged 24.3 3-point attempts per game last season — Moren expected her team to play lock down on the perimeter, but what she saw instead was a parade of errors.

“We left a shooter (open) off the strong side, we never do that,” Moren said. “We switched a guard to a five ball screen, we never do that. Those little things if you don't nip it in the bud real quick, those are the things that are going to get your ass beat.”

Brown’s numbers in the second half were especially frustrating for Moren.

With IU leading 39-21 at the half, Moren laid out a goal of holding Brown to under 45 points. The Bears scored 39 points on 46.9% shooting in the second half and went 7 of 17 from 3-point range.

Moren was specifically critical of fifth-year senior Chloe Moore-McNeil, who she described as “lethargic.”

“There's going to be really good film for our guys to be able to see themselves and just where the slippage was and how it has to get corrected,” Moren said. “It has to get corrected really fast. We got a really good Harvard team coming in here that plays similar to the way Brown plays."

Indiana women’s basketball gets ‘careless’ on offense against Brown

Moren was willing to forgive IU’s 18 turnovers, but she couldn’t excuse the overall lack of focus on offense. She was dismayed to see the Hoosiers launching 3-pointers against a Brown team that was playing without a pair of key front court players.

“That's disappointing cause I think we are a smart team and our advantage was clearly in the low post tonight,” Moren said. “We started figuring that out a little in the second half, but it shouldn't take until halftime to make that correction when you have an older team that we have.”

Indiana had success whenever the ball did get into the post. Lilly Meister had 13 points (4 of 7) and Karoline Striplin had 17 points (6 of 8) and Brown had a hard time defending IU’s bigs without fouling them.

They each finished the game 5 of 5 from the free-throw line.

Moren wants to see immediate improvement on both ends of the floor and promised to do whatever it takes to hold players accountable. She illustrated the point by referencing a famed Bob Knight quote with less colorful language.

“It's like the old coach (Bob) Knight comment — the best way sometimes is they got to sit next to you to start to figure some things out,” Moren said. “If we have to do that, we will do that cause I have to get their attention somehow.”
