Indiana basketball guard Trey Galloway hopes to be 'full go' next week

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Indiana men's basketball guard Trey Galloway hopes to be "full go" next week at practice.

Galloway continues to take his time rehabbing the knee injury he suffered at the end of the 2023-24 season as the Hoosiers opened practiced at the end of September.

"It's been good, it's been great to be back out there with the guys," Galloway said at Big Ten Media Days on Thursday. "It's been a long process with the knee and everything, it takes a lot of time to really recover and stuff. I think we've done a good job with taking my time with everything, there's no need to rush. I've been here for awhile, I know what I need to do to get ready."

While he hasn't been a full participant yet — he hasn't gone full contact — he's done more than he did during the team's summer workouts.

"Next week, pretty much will be full go," Galloway said.

Galloway suffered the injury in practice leading up to IU’s regular-season finale against Michigan State. He played in the game wearing knee brace for the first time all year, but checked out with 11:54 to go in the first half and didn't return. He averaged 10.6 points and a career-best 4.8 assists per game in 30 starts.

He was IU's primary ball-handler for a prolonged stretch of last season thanks to an injury to Xavier Johnson that left the team short on depth in the backcourt. Galloway will be handing off those responsibilities to Washington State transfer Myles Rice this year and return to a more traditional off-ball shooting guard.

"My role has changed every year, it's going to change this year as well," Galloway said. "Being able to sacrifice that, and being able to move in different positions is great. Being able to have guys like Myles and new guys come in, those guys are going to help my game as well. Just being able to space the floor and make plays off the dribble and stuff. It's going to be great."

Galloway is also excited about returning to practice and getting reps in the new up-tempo offense that the Hoosiers have been working on.

"We are going to play very fast," Galloway said. "That's one thing we are going to change a lot. Obviously last year, there were times we could play fast a little bit, this year the speed we got and the guys can all handle the ball. It's not just one guy that can bring up the ball, we got multiple guys."
