'I'll never forget the love.' Quincy Olivari has been a 'godsend' to Xavier basketball

What will Quincy Olivari remember the most from his one season at Xavier?

It's simple.

It's a sharpshooter's dream. The hot streak − where a basket resembles the ocean and you're always in range, sinking continuous deep shots to steal momentum and electrify a crowd.

For Olivari, he's lived it so many times this season.

"I'll never forget Dayvion (McKnight) passing me the ball on the fast break and hitting a wing 3 (pointer)," Olivari explained. "Knowing the other team is gonna call timeout so I get to run down to the other side of the floor and run back and enjoy the fans and my teammates going crazy."

It's a scene Musketeer Nation has grown accustomed to this season. Olivari shot nearly 50% (70-of-142) from 3-point range and averaged over 20 points per game at Cintas Center.

Unfortunately, for the Xavier faithful, the ride is over. Olivari went down swinging in his final home game. There was another gleeful stride down the court in celebration of a hot streak, when Olivari's 4-for-4 second-half start gave Xavier a 46-41 lead over No. 8 Marquette and forced a Shaka Smart timeout.

Unfortunately, Olivari's 32 points weren't enough in an 86-80 loss to the Golden Eagles Saturday night.

Xavier's season will go down as one of the toughest in recent memory. In all likelihood, the Musketeers (15-16) will lose the country's fourth-longest streak of consecutive winning seasons (28) and miss the NCAA Tournament. Olivari was a consistent bright spot in a season littered with lows.

"We recruited him (Olivari) from Rice. I don't know if anyone really expected him to come in and do what he's done," Xavier head coach Sean Miller said Saturday. "He's been a godsend."

'I'll never forget the love that I received here.'

Olivari has been a Musketeer for less than a year. In less than a week, his collegiate career will likely end at Madison Square Garden.

In a short time, he's left a lasting impact on and off the court.

"I'll never forget the love that I received here," Olivari said. "It's definitely second-to-none outside of my family. When they're here and the crowd's here, it's like everybody's showing love. It's a great feeling, man.

"Whether the season was up or down, they always showed up, showed out. They cheered for us when our names were called for the starting lineup, they cheered for us when we hit a big shot, they would boo the ref when they thought they made a bad call. I'll never forget the unwavering support that the city and the fans showed me."

Olivari chasing history

The regular season might be over and Xavier's postseason hopes are bleak, but Olivari is not done yet. After scoring 30-plus points for the third time this season, Olivari leapfrogged Providence guard Devin Carter for the Big East scoring title at 19.5 points per game.

Olivari is the first Musketeer to lead the Big East in scoring since Xavier joined the conference prior to the 2013-14 season. Souley Boum (2023), Zach Freemantle (2021), Naji Marshall (2020) and Trevon Bluiett (2017) were all top-5.

Olivari's done it while playing the 13th-hardest schedule of opposing defenses in the nation, according to KenPom.

"For Quincy to do what he's done, lead the league in scoring on our team, he's had an exceptional year," Miller said.

After draining six 3-pointers against Marquette, Olivari has 98 triples on the year. That's fourth all-time for a single season in Xavier history. Olivari needs to hit eight more to set the single season record of 105, set by Bluiett in 2018. He's three behind Lionel Chalmers (101 in 2004) for third all-time and six behind Lenny Brown (104 in 1999) for second.
