Hugh Freeze lands first two Auburn football commits as coach for 2023 class

AUBURN — Auburn football got the first two commitments of the Hugh Freeze era Sunday.

Tyler Johnson, a three-star offensive tackle from Louisiana who was previously committed to Texas Tech, was the first to announce his intentions via Twitter.

"Thank you to all the coaches who have took the time to recruit me," Johnson wrote. "I am officially done with the recruitment. 200% committed to The University of Auburn."

Johnson is listed at 6-foot-6, 300 pounds, and the 247Sports Composite rankings have him tabbed as the No. 29 recruit in Louisiana and the 59th-best offensive tackle in the country.

He had been committed to the Red Raiders since September. Other programs Johnson received offers from include Baylor, Missouri and LSU, among others. Liberty, where Freeze left before coming to the Plains, also had an offer out to Johnson.

A few hours later, three-star defensive back Colton Hood made it two commitments on the day.

The 6-foot, 170-pound Hood, who is rated as the No. 60 cornerback in the country, is an Auburn legacy. His dad, uncle, brother and cousin all played for the Tigers. Roderick Hood, Colton's uncle, was the most productive of the bunch, finishing his Auburn career with five interceptions and 106 total tackles. He went on to have an eight-year NFL career with four different teams, including a four-year stint with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Hood was previously committed to Michigan State, but decommitted from the Spartans on Saturday. He also received plenty of attention from other SEC programs, as he fielded offers from Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, LSU, Kentucky, Florida and Arkansas.

Hood, who attends Eagles Landing Christian Academy in McDonough, Georgia, is a teammate of four-star offensive lineman DJ Chester. Chester is committed to LSU, but Auburn is reportedly still after his services.
