Hearing date has been set in former Kansas basketball player Arterio Morris' court case

LAWRENCE — Former Kansas basketball player Arterio Morris’ court case took another step Wednesday.

Morris, who last appeared in Douglas County District Court in mid-October, was back in court again Wednesday through Zoom. He is facing one count of rape. And a “go” preliminary hearing was scheduled for Dec. 29, upon recommendation from Morris’ counsel Hatem Chahine.

Morris’ arrest for the alleged crime occurred in late September. There was a $75,000 surety bond, and he was released. After being dismissed from the KU men’s basketball team, he has pursued playing at the junior college level.

According to a complaint document, Morris faces a “severity level 1 person felony.” The penalty range varies “from a minimum of 147 months to a maximum of 653 months in prison and/or a fine of up to $300,000 and 36 months of post-release supervision, pursuant to K.S.A. 21-6804, 21-6807, 21-6611(a)(2), & 22-3717(d)(1)(A), and amendments thereto.”
