The Cleveland Guardians quest for an American League pennant will continue.
The Guardians won the decisive Game 5 of their ALDS against the Tigers 7-3 on Saturday to advance to the American League Championship Series for the first time since 2016. The Guardians won the pennant that year before a crushing loss to the Cubs in seven games in the World Series.
That was part of Cleveland's eight-game losing streak in winner-take-all playoff games. That streak is no more, and the Guardians are headed to New York to play the Yankees in the best-of-seven ALCS.
They got there thanks in large part to a fifth-inning grand slam by Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas in Game 5 of the American League Divisional Series against the Detroit Tigers.

The World Series is scheduled to begin Friday, Oct. 25, with Game 2 the next night. Games 3-5 are scheduled for Oct. 28-30. If necessary, Games 6 and 7 are Nov. 1-2. Fox will televise all World Series games.
