Grizzlies rookie GG Jackson breaks Kobe Bryant scoring record in loss vs Bulls
GG Jackson’s reaction said it all. He opened his mouth wide, surprised as he found out the history he made on Thursday night.
On the day a Kobe Bryant statue rose outside of Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, down came one of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer's records in Memphis. Jackson’s 27 points in the Grizzlies' loss to the Chicago Bulls broke Bryant’s record for the youngest player in NBA history to score 25 or more points in a game coming off the bench.
Jackson achieved the feat at 19 years, 53 days of age. Bryant was 19 years, 78 days when he scored 25 points on Nov. 9, 1997.
“Shoutout to Kobe,” Jackson said. “Wow. I feel like this is going to be stamped in Grizzlies history for a long time to come. I’ve said this before, but it’s not me, it’s all glory to God.”
Jackson shot 9-for-18 from the field and made four 3-pointers against the Bulls. He scored at least five points in each quarter of a consistent night.
The Grizzlies drafted Jackson in the second round with the 45th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. He has scored at least 16 points three consecutive games. He averaged 10.6 points per game in January after his playing time ballooned due to a plethora of injuries on the roster.
Bryant still holds the record for the youngest to score 30 or more points. Jackson has the rest of this season to surpass Bryant’s 33-point mark.
“It’s not a secret. When you see him play, he’s going to be a great, great player," ,” teammate Santi Aldama said of Jackson. "He’s always asking questions and trying to be better. When you have a guy with that care factor on top of all the skill he has, he’s going to be special for sure.”
