Grizzlies losing streak reaches eight games after road loss vs Hornets
One streak had to end.
The Charlotte Hornets entered Saturday with a 10-game losing streak, and the Memphis Grizzlies weren't far behind with a seven-game skid. Memphis was favored and had the logistical advantage with the Hornets on the second night of a back to back.
In the end, none of those advantages for Memphis mattered. The Grizzlies struggled to get defensive stops in a 115-106 loss to the Hornets at Spectrum Center.
Jaren Jackson Jr. led the Grizzlies (18-35) with 29 points. Miles Bridges paced the Hornets (11-41) with 25 points.
Memphis now has the longest losing streak in the NBA.
Here are some takeaways from the game.
More options for Grizzlies
Recent trade acquisitions Yuta Watanabe and Lamar Stevens were both active Saturday, but neither player was in the Grizzlies' rotation. The return of Luke Kennard and Derrick Rose gave the Grizzlies more depth. The starting point guard carousel continued with Jacob Gilyard getting the nod.
The Grizzlies finally have enough players available to choose whether certain guys should play or not. Scotty Pippen Jr. not being in the rotation after having 15 points and six assists on Thursday against Chicago was puzzling.
Jaren Jackson Jr. keeps scoring streak alive
A bright spot this season has been Jackson's growth as an isolation scorer and playmaker. Jackson has now scored at least 20 points in seven straight games, which is a season high. His usage is playing a factor into the results, but Jackson didn't have many problems scoring when Ja Morant and Desmond Bane were playing, either. He scored more than 20 points in the first three games he played with Bane and Morant this season.
Like many other opponents, Charlotte through different looks at Jackson, but the Grizzlies big man is using a diversified three-level scoring skillset to create quality looks.
Another fourth quarter goes to the opponent
The Grizzlies made shots in the fourth quarter, but they were unable to get enough stops. Charlotte pulled away each time the Grizzlies got within two possessions. Memphis shot 59% in the fourth quarter, and the Hornets made 58% of their shots.
What's next
The Grizzlies will return home on Monday (7 p.m.) for a matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans. Memphis won't have another road game until Feb. 28.
