Grizzlies' Jaren Jackson Jr. not expected to play in season opener. Here's the latest

Memphis Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr.'s regular season debut will have to wait.

Jackson will be out for the Grizzlies' season opener on Wednesday night against the Utah Jazz, coach Taylor Jenkins said on Monday. Jackson has been dealing with what Jenkins called a "low-grade hamstring strain" since the first Grizzlies preseason practice.

"Hamstring's in a good spot, he's been progressing well," Jenkins said. "We're going to be cautious, have him get a little more five-on-five in the next couple of days and probably trend more towards later in the week when he'll return."

Jackson has been ramping up and doing more individual work in practice over the past two weeks. The Grizzlies had hoped that a couple of "high intensity" practices ahead after Friday's preseason finale would give Jackson a chance to be available.

After Wednesday's opener, the Grizzlies will travel to Houston for the first leg of a back to back against the Rockets. Saturday will be the team's home opener.

Since Memphis is prioritizing Jackson's conditioning, it's also unlikely that he'll play in both legs of the back to back following Wednesday's game.

Santi Aldama is expected to start in place of Jackson alongside of Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Marcus Smart and Zach Edey.

Memphis is also without Luke Kennard (foot soreness), GG Jackson (foot surgery), Vince Williams Jr. (shin stress reaction) and Cam Spencer. Jenkins described Spencer and Williams as "still a couple of weeks away." Kennard won't be available for at least the first week, and Jackson is expected to be re-evaluated around late November.

"We'll have 12 guys going into that first night and we'll see what we're willing to roll out their versus the Jazz," Jenkins said.
