'Great wall of Texas': Chiaka Ogbogu leads USA volleyball to Olympics win over Serbia

The United States Women's Volleyball Team powered through Serbia on Wednesday at the 2024 Olympic games, clinching an epic five set win 25-17, 25-20, 20-25, 14-25, 17-15.

In the midst of that win stood Texas volleyball alumna Chiaka Ogbogu. Facing reigning World Championships MVP Tijana Boskovic, the former Longhorn made "Middle Blocker University" proud. She tied an Olympic record for blocks in a match with eight and collected 14 points overall. Her defense was critical in keeping Boskovic in check in the first two sets.

Texas fans were out in droves as she put on a performance that made the 40-acres proud.

Serbia rallied in the third and fourth sets, but the damage was already done. The U.S. were able to close them out on the thinnest of margins, with the final Serbian spike landing out after barely missing blockers' hands. Annie Drew led the U.S. in points with 16 while Boskovic was able to tally 31 after a slow start.

Ogbogu attended Texas from 2013-2017, leaving with the program record in blocks. That record would be broken a few years later by Asjia O'Neal, who did not make the Olympic roster. Ogbogu was also on the 2021 U.S. Olympics team that won the country's very first gold medal in volleyball.

The States' win was especially crucial after they lost to China in their opening match. They now sit in second place with a 1-1 record in Group C, facing a favorable matchup vs. France on Sunday at 7 a.m. Serbia sits at the top of the group with four points and faces China on Sunday.
