Grading Missouri football after comfortable Week 2 win over Buffalo

How about two straight shutouts to open your season?

Missouri football’s defense stifled Buffalo in a 38-0 win Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Columbia, another near-flawless defensive effort from new defensive coordinator Corey Batoon’s unit.

Here is how we graded Missouri (2-0) in its second game of the season. The defense — spoiler — received an A:

Offense: C

There was a lot of good from the Missouri offense, but also a lot of careless penalties.

A facemask violation on right guard Mitchell Walters pulled back a third-quarter Nate Noel touchdown, but three plays later Noel did make it into the end zone. It was the eighth — yes, eighth — penalty of the game on the Tigers’ offense.

Brady Cook was dynamic on his legs, running for 62 yards and two touchdowns. He passed for 228 yards and had one pick. Luther Burden III exited the game in the second quarter with illness, but Theo Wease Jr. had his best day as a Tiger with a 149-yard, 13-catch night.

It’s hard to grumble at more than 200 rushing yards and 500 yards of total offense, but the Tigers have mistakes to clean up.

Defense: A

Marvin Burks Jr. picked off Buffalo quarterback CJ Ogbonna on the Bulls’ second series of the game, and the Tigers forced two turnovers on downs before the half was over. Buffalo’s other two first-half drives ended in three-and-outs.

Picture perfect stuff, again, from defensive coordinator Corey Batoon’s unit. The Tigers will face better offenses, but two shutouts to open the season is excellent no matter the opponent.

Special teams: C

The Tigers asked a lot of placekicker Blake Craig in the first half, and he wasn’t quite up to the tall order. He made a 51-yard field goal to open the scoring, but missed from 49 and 52 before the half was over — the first misses of his young MU career. He was 5-of-5 on PATs.

On his first punt of the game, Luke Bauer hoofed one 47 yards to the 4-yard line.

Coaches: A

Whatever adjustments offensive coordinator Kirby Moore made after the first quarter worked as the offense came out and essentially sealed the game with 21 points in the second. The second half went a bit stagnant again, but the foundation is there for the offense to pick up.

It's impossible to give the coaches anything other than top marks for the way the defense was called.

Overall: B+

The defense appears to be in a tremendous spot through two games. More of the same moving forward and the Tigers will be in a good spot, no matter the opponent.

The offense looks explosive in bursts, but with Boston College coming to town, the Tigers have mistakes to clean up on that side of the ball.
