The good and the bad from the 49ers' much-needed win over the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football
After falling to 3-4 with an ugly loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl, the San Francisco 49ers faced the Dallas Cowboys in a highly-anticipated contest before a much-needed bye week. Following a slow start that saw the 49ers trailing at halftime, Kyle Shanahan's squad looked like a different team in the third quarter.
With a 7-for-7 third quarter from Brock Purdy, the 49ers were able to take control of the contest. However, a pair of late touchdowns from CeeDee Lamb made the game tight down the stretch. While the Cowboys had the chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter, the 49ers' defense helped slam the door late to secure a 30-24 victory in Santa Clara on Sunday night.
With the 49ers now heading into the bye week at 4-4, here's the good and some of the bay from San Francisco's 30-24 win over Dallas in Week 8.
Bad: Injuries
Despite securing a much-needed victory, the 49ers couldn't escape Sunday Night Football without another set of injuries to a pair of key playmakers.
Before halftime, Jordan Mason exited the contest with a shoulder injury. While he wasn't ruled out, Mason stayed on the sideline with his helmet for the remainder of the contest.
Later in the game, Deebo Samuel picked up a rib injury. Samuel was listed as questionable for the remainder of game due to his rib injury.
Breakout linebacker Dee Winters also suffered a concussion on Sunday night against the Cowboys.
Luckily, the 49ers will get a much-needed bye on the schedule next week with the chance to get healthy.
Good: National Tight End Day
After a flurry of tight ends recorded touchdowns on National Tight Ends Day, George Kittle served up an impressive performance in the finale on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys. Kittle was the engine to the 49ers offense, recording a season-high 128 yards receiving. The 49ers star tight end celebrated National Tight Ends day with a touchdown reception from Brock Purdy.
Good: Nick Bosa
Nick Bosa was in the Cowboys backfield all night on Sunday night. Bosa hit Dak Prescott three different times on Sunday, consistently beating Cowboys tackle Terrance Steele.
Early in the game, Prescott was able to get rid of the ball before Bosa could wrap up a sack, but Bosa's pressure cause an arrant throw from Prescott that resulted in an interception.
Bosa later finished the job, securing a timely sack against Prescott. Bosa finished the game with three tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss and three quarterback pressures.
Bad: Deebo Samuel's Hands
Through six games, Deebo Samuel has yet to record a drop for the 49ers. Over 15 games last season, Samuel only notched two drops during the 2023 campaign. Despite being one of the 49ers most surehanded pass catchers, the star wideout struggled with catching the football on Sunday night.
During the first half, Samuel had two costly drops. With the 49ers going for it on fourth down, Purdy targeted Samuel for an open pass that would've moved the chains. However, a drop on a late throw to Samuel ended the drive. With two minutes remaining in the first half, Samuel dropped an open pass with room to run.
Samuel also had a long touchdown catch and run pulled off the board due to a penalty.
Samuel finished the game with four receptions for 71 yards and four carries for 15 yards.
Good: Anders Carlson
After missing an extra point against the Kansas City Chiefs, the 49ers' newest kicker Anders Carlson posted a perfect performance on Sunday against the Cowboys.
Carlson banged through all three of his field goal attempts, including one from 50 yards out. Carlson also drilled all three of his extra-point attempts to secure a perfect day against the Cowboys.
Good: Isaac Guerendo
With Jordan Mason sidelined, rookie Isaac Guerendo stepped in and didn't miss a beat. The fourth-round pick out of Lousiville posted a breakout performance on Sunday night, rushing for 85 yards on 14 carries. Guerendo wore on the Cowboys' defense, rushing for 6.1 yards per carry.
In the second half, Guerendo punched in the first touchdown of his young career. Guerendo later had a chance to score another touchdown but opted to slide and drown out the clock instead.
Guerendo's low moment of the game came when he attempted to pick up a blitz. Cowboys linebacker De'Marvion Overshown flew by Guerendo on his way to a big hit and sack on Brock Purdy.
Good: Brock Purdy's Rushing
While Brock Purdy started the game slow against the Cowboys, a perfect third quarter helped the 49ers quarterback finish with a solid performance on Sunday Night Football. Purdy recorded 260 yards on 18-of-26 passing with one touchdown through the air. Yet, Purdy really did his damage on the ground.
Purdy picked up multiple first down and chunk plays on offense with his feet. Purdy ran the ball eight times for a season-best 53 yards on the ground. Purdy also plunged in a touchdown rush.
Purdy has now ran the ball eight times in back-to-back weeks for the 49ers. Running the ball is quietly becoming another threat for the 49ers young passer.
