Girls basketball: Palm Beach County hoopers to know this winter season

The regular season has kicked off for high school basketball teams and the scene is already looking good for the girls of Palm Beach County.

It's time for a quick refresher on the local players who can be counted on to push new limits in the paint this winter.

Here are 14 and some of their top-tier teammates:

Philleah Bright, PG, Suncoast

Class: Junior

Not fielding any senior starters for last year's 11-15 season and just one in 2022, the Chargers have been a young squad for some time. Among nine coming back to Suncoast this winter is Bright, a consistent bright spot for the 5A crew. She certainly will be once again as the team looks to compete in District 14, which also hosts Jensen Beach and American Heritage-Plantation.

Last year, Bright posted three double-doubles and averaged a team-leading 21.4 points per game, the No. 4 scorer in the division.

Tatyana Campise-Pinkney, G, Boca Raton

Class: Sophomore

The younger half of a tough-to-beat Bobcat duo hitting the hardwood this winter was a transformative factor in Boca's flip from 11-13 in 2022 to 21-8 last season.

Ranked among 264 recruits for the Class of 2026 by PrepHoops, Campise-Pinkney has been labeled one to watch, but Palm Beach County hoops fans knew that would be the case after her freshman campaign. Campise-Pinkney totaled 300 points, 112 rebounds, 87 steals and 85 assists for a trip to 7A region semifinals.

Tamia Coleman, SG/PG/SF, Palm Beach Central

Final score, Palm Beach Central, 51, Wellington, 41.

Final score, Palm Beach Central, 51, Wellington, 41.

Class: Senior

Central's record-setter E'Zaria Adams may be off playing at Eastern Florida State, but the Broncos are keeping the accuracy coming this winter with Coleman still on the court. Last year, Coleman tied Adams with 44% field goal accuracy. Down the stat sheet, the multisport athlete, signed to FAMU volleyball, averaged 9.2 points per game, 8.7 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game through 17 appearances in the 17-9 season.

When Coleman isn't cutting to the rim to score herself, look for points and possessions to come from second-year starter and sophomore Izabelle Vilmont, who averaged 7.3 points and 2.2 steals in 22 games in 2023.

Delaney Cronin, C, Boca Raton Christian

Class: Junior

Cronin, a 6-foot-2 center, and point guard Abigail Quinn are returning for their junior years in hopes of toppling 2A division rival Berean Christian for a district championship on top of a return to the postseason. As a sophomore, Cronin led the Blazers in rebounds, averaging 7.5 per game, falling just a point behind Quinn's team-high scoring average of 12.4 points per game last season, exiting at 16-9 in region quarterfinals.

The last time Boca Christian came close to winning 70% of its schedule was a decade ago. If things are cyclical, that indicates a sweet playoff run for the team this fall. Maybe even one where the Blazers jump the Bulldogs for their best go yet.

Ja'Nyia Donaldson, SF/SG, Benjamin

Class: Senior

Former teammate and Bucs standout point guard Taylor Blackshear shouldered quite the load over the years at Benjamin before becoming a starter at Palm Beach State. With the transfer of young prodigy point guard Karolina Ramirez to Martin County, Donaldson is inheriting a little more than the expected role as one of the biggest senior contributors for a young Benjamin team.

She showed off her agility to be labeled a "standout" forward by Prep Hoops in April, well-conditioned by a productive 20 games as Benjamin went 14-9 and to region semifinals that winter. Then, Donaldson and Ramirez tied for second on the team in blocks with 87 each. With no Blackshear or Ramirez, Donaldson appears due for a breakout year.

Ashley Hendricks, C/PF, Berean Christian

Class: Senior

This winter will wrap up quite a career for Hendricks, whose freshman arrival saw the Bulldogs go from 7-17 to 13-4 and 2A region semifinals in 2021. Berean went on to go 22-5 in 2022 to finish region runner-up. Last winter, the team reached the second round of the postseason before another season-ending loss to Miami Christian. As the 2024 season approaches, her career stats stand as follows: 14.7 points per game, 11.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 3.1 steals, 1.9 blocks. In each of the past two seasons, she's posted 18 double-doubles.

Now, Hendricks has one more shot to give herself the happy ending her years of contributions to the program deserve.

Being 6-foot-1 is sure to help her rise to the occasion.

Alana Pinnock, G/F, Somerset Academy-Canyons

Class: Eighth grade

An 18-8 run to 4A region semifinals was forged by a stellar season for the then-seventh grader, billed at 5-foot-10 heading into her third year starting for the Cougars. Leading the roster with an average 4.6 assists per game for team-leading scoring averages by freshmen Alanna Fabrini and Delanie Doty, Pinnock herself averaged 11.8 points per game and came in second on the roster with 6.2 rebounds per game.

Jade Jones, SF/SG, King's

Class: Junior

Can the Lions make a three-peat run to Lakeland? With Jones returning, the answer looks like a yes.

Granted the Lions are undergoing major changes with Jordan Race and Janessa Williams now competing in college, that leaves more room for the young stock-riser's upward progression to continue. Last season, a sophomore Jones came in second on the roster in scoring and rebounds, averaging 12.5 and 8.7, respectively. She led the team in steals and blocks, totaling 69 and 18 each through 26 games. Jones also had eight double-doubles along the way.

Somehow, now, Jones will have an even bigger role, but her underclassman support staff displayed a lot of potential in King's' most recent 23-5 run, leaving a lot to look forward to in 2024.

Courtney Lowe, G, Boca Raton

Junior guard, Courtney Lowe, is a district champion for the first time in her career.
Junior guard, Courtney Lowe, is a district champion for the first time in her career.

Class: Senior

Campise-Pinkney and Lowe's clutch 3-pointers are bound to give the Bobcats big advantages in 2024. Lowe went high with a team-best 46, resulting in a leading 379 total points last fall to clinch a milestone district championship. Her younger counterpart came not too far behind with 34 threes.

The senior leader can score inside, too. Lowe's versatility made her an easy selection for the NCAA College Basketball Academy back in July. It'll be exciting to see what she brings to the court from the lessons and skills she learned at the invitational camp in Memphis, Tennessee.

Heading into the year, Lowe already has offers from the University of Fort Lauderdale, an NCAA Division I program, and Babson, a Division III program, where she toured in October.

Ezria Pierre-Louis, G/F, Palm Beach Lakes

Class: Senior

District finals saw Palm Beach Lakes fall a few points short of making the postseason in Class 7A over rival Palm Beach Gardens. This winter, leading a well-balanced trio of Rams — also featuring seniors Zuri Miller-Whiteside and Myla Jones — on what the team hopes will be a revenge tour is Pierre-Louis.

Pierre-Louis averaged 11.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.9 steals per game through 19 appearances with seven double-doubles and a 14-8 record.

Teresa Pierre, F/C, Atlantic

Class: Senior

After an offseason in the travel circuit spent improving her offensive skills, Pierre is going to be packing a new punch on the hardwood this winter with the Eagles.

Having committed to North Central University, a Division III program in Minnesota, the stress of choosing a home at the next level is out of the way. Pierre, billed at 5-foot-10, also has the support of such seniors as returning starter Elanie Sullard, the team's scoring leader with an average 16.9 points per game last season, and Myrella Guerra-Oliveira, who transferred from a Santaluces team that's seen better days.

Before the Eagles were eliminated in district quarterfinals by West Boca Raton — one of five defeats suffered last winter — they beat the Bulls 40-36 to wrap up a 13-win 2023 regular season. The trio of captains are well-suited to continue Atlantic's turnaround from the squad that took 13 losses in 2022.

Kyana Poitier, F, Palm Beach Gardens

Class: Senior

Although Lakes won't have to run into former Ram Cienna Thigpen on the floor this fall after completing her senior season at Gardens, Poitier remains a threat as she gears up to defend a district title in 2024. As a junior, she finished the year as the No. 3 rebounder, regardless of classification, with 15.9 per game.

Before region runner-up Oak Ridge ended Gardens' turnaround season in overtime of the second round, Poitier averaged 11.8 points, two assists and 2.6 steals per game to record 19 double-doubles. The Gators finished 16-9.

Janiah Suprius, PG, Seminole Ridge

Class: Junior

After a 15-7 run to region semifinals last winter, Suprius is back to star for the Hawks with the help of fellow underclassman standouts Briana Custodio and Jayla Midget.

She broke the book for the Hawks with a team-high 13 points, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game, and also had an average of 6.2 rebounds as a sophomore. The left-handed point guard's shifty skills and midrange efficiency are going to be key to another deep run as Ridge recovers from the exit of starters like seniors Kiori Butler, Tatyana Crafton and Suprius' older sister, Isaiah.

Julia Vazquez, PG, King's

Class: Junior

Opportunities for final four trips and district championships at King's were just 7 miles away for Vazquez. The former Cardinal Newman Crusader decided to take it.

Undergoing three coaching changes since 2020, the program at Newman has stayed afloat for playoff runs despite the circumstances, but that was made easier by the talents of now-graduates Madison Mingo and Checorey Bouie. Last winter's 17-11 record was quarterbacked by Vazquez, who led the team with averages of 2.8 assists and 1.8 steals, sitting around eight points and 2.3 rebounds per game.

Vazquez joins the Lions along with her younger sister, Sophia, who was an important freshman figure for the Crusaders in 2023.
