Giants vs. Panthers: 5 things to know about Week 10
The Carolina Panthers (2-7) play host to the New York Giants (2-7) at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany this Sunday as part of the NFL's International Games.
Here are five things to know before the Week 10 kickoff.
The series
This will be the 13th matchup in the regular season between the Giants and the Panthers dating back to 1995 when the Panthers entered the NFL as an expansion team.
The series is tied 6-6. The Panthers won the only postseason meeting, 23-0, in the 2006 Wild Card round.
The last meeting between these two clubs occurred on September 18, 2022, with the Giants beating the Panthers, 19-16, at MetLife Stadium.
A battle for last place in the NFC
The Giants and Panthers are both 2-7 this season and according to NFLGSIS, are ranked 16th and 14th, respectively, with New Orleans (also 2-7) at No. 15.
This game could decide draft seeding, however. Currently, as per Tankathon, there are seven teams tied at the top of the draft order with 2-7 records.
The tiebreaker is based on strength of schedule, with the teams who have faced the easiest schedules on top.
The current order is as follows: New England, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Carolina, Cleveland, Las Vegas and, of course, the Giants because few things are going right for them right now.
Giants are rare favorites this week
The Giants are listed as 4.5-point favorites on many betting platforms. It is the first time they have been favored in a regular season game since Week 2 of last season when they were 4.5-point favorites on the road in Arizona -- a span of 24 games.
The Giants, as underdogs, have covered the point spread just twice. Six of their nine games have gone under the projected total.
The Panthers have been underdogs every week this season as well. They've covered the point spread just twice and seven of their nine games have gone over the projected total.
Brian Burns faces his former mates
Giants linebacker Brian Burns will be facing his old team for the first time since being traded to the Giants this past offseason.
Burns was selected 16th overall by the Panthers in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Florida State and became one of the NFL's most consistent pass rushers.
In 80 games from 2019-23, Burns had 59 tackles for a loss, 46 sacks, 13 passes defensed and a forced fumble. He also recorded 7.5 (or more) sacks in each of his seasons with Carolina.
This season with New York, Burns has 36 tackles (22 solo) with 11 QB hits, seven tackles for loss, seven passes defensed, 5.0 sacks, and one forced fumble.
Burns is the only player in the NFL this season with 5.0 or more sacks and seven or more passes defensed.
Giants offensive rookies excelling
The Giants' 2024 draft class have been major contributors this season and have given the offense a shot in the arm.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Giants are the only NFL team this season whose top two leaders in scrimmage yards are rookies.
First-round pick, wide receiver Malik Nabers, leads the team in receiving targets (84), receptions (55), receiving yards (557), and receiving touchdowns (3).
Third-round selection, tight end Theo Johnson, has averaged 11.8 yards per reception -- the highest among NFL rookie tight ends with more than 15 catches this year.
Fifth rounder, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr., leads the Giants and ranks fourth among NFL rookies in scrimmage yards (558: 442 rushing, 116 receiving).
