Giants report card: How we graded Big Blue in Week 10 loss to Panthers
The New York Giants were defeated by the Carolina Panthers in Germany on Sunday morning.
The 20-17 loss was a terrible outing, especially against arguably the worst team in the NFL. This was a winnable game despite the Giants losing the turnover battle by two. New York is now 2-8 and last in the NFC East.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what we saw during the game and how we graded the Giants in this loss.
Offense: D-
For the second time this season, the Giants failed to score a single point in the first half. This was also the first game all season that the Giants committed three turnovers.
Daniel Jones was credited with the first two turnovers as he did not have his best game in Allianz Arena. Several times he was given a clean pocket but failed to connect with open receivers as his attempts were often off target.
For the fifth time this season, Jones finished the game with zero passing touchdowns. He finished with a stat line of 190 passing yards, two interceptions, and a lowly 50.5 passer rating.
To give the former sixth overall pick a partial out, the second interception was the fault of rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. who dropped a pass in the red zone. It was a roller coaster of a game for the 2024 fifth-round pick, as he totaled 104 yards and a touchdown on 19 touches but also fumbled the ball in overtime leading to a Panthers victory.
The rushing attack was the only positive of the day as Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary combined for 143 rushing yards and a touchdown on 26 attempts. Jones also added 26 rushing yards and a touchdown on seven attempts.
Defense: C-
The run defense this season has been inexcusable and its faults were on full display in Week 10.
The Panthers totaled 188 rushing yards and a touchdown in this contest while averaging 5.9 yards per carry. The offensive line was getting too much push against the Giants' defensive front and Chuba Hubbard took full advantage to the ring of 153 yards.
The defensive line also did not pressure Bryce Young as much as one would have hoped against a porous Panthers offensive line. Brian Burns recorded the only sack of the game for Big Blue in his personal revenge game. The team as a whole only finished with four quarterback hits which is close to a season low.
Young was also allowed to extend too many plays and convert on several passing third-down attempts which is unacceptable. The quarterback was able to record his highest passer rating of the season, 86.4
The only positive for this unit was that they performed nearly perfectly over the last six drives of the game as they allowed only 21 yards over this span and forced one fumble.
Special Teams: D
It was a bad game from the special teams unit and could have been much worse if there were not offsetting penalties on Ihmir Smith-Marsette's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
The major lowlight was that Graham Gano missed a 43-yard field goal attempt in this first half which could have helped New York win in regulation. Gano did make his two extra point attempts and his other field goal attempt but the first miss proved to be very costly.
Outside of the kicking department, the special teams unit performed modestly in the return game and Jamie Gillan was able to pin four out of five punts inside of the 20-yard line.
Coaching: D-
Brian Daboll potentially lost his job on Sunday as he fell to one of the worst teams in the NFL.
Daboll is now firmly on the hot seat. He called a terrible game on Sunday. Too often on third down he tried to do too much instead of calling a base vanilla play and getting the first down. A prime example of this was when Daboll called a flea flicker on third-and-1 instead of running the ball.
On the other side of the ball, Shane Bowen has yet to figure out how to deal with a capable rushing attack. To make matters worse, for the second straight week, the Giants pass rush was underwhelming and may no longer be one of the best units in the league going forward.
Bowen also needs to send his players to a tackling clinic because the tackling on Sunday was terrible. Hubbard had forced seven missed tackles in the first half alone and things only got slightly better in the second half.
