Giants report card: How we graded Big Blue in Week 1 preseason win

.
.

The New York Giants opened the preseason with a 14-3 victory over the Detroit Lions at a rainy MetLife Stadium on Thursday night. It was an impressive performance led by a productive ground game and stout defense.

After fiery joint practices earlier in the week, the Giants and Lions managed to keep things cool, coasting to a conclusion with no significant injuries.

Here's a quick breakdown of what we saw during the game and how we graded the Giants in this win.

It was the Eric Gray show on Thursday night against the Lions but if you remove his performance, the offense did very little despite solid O-line play.

Quarterback Drew Lock looked overwhelmed and confused before leaving with an injury, the wide receivers frequently struggled to create separation, the tight ends had some miscues (at least one drop), and the overall production was imbalanced.

The combination of Gray, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Dante Miller combined for 194 yards from scrimmage. The Giants had 250 total yards as a team.

Perhaps more concerning is that the wide receivers combined for two receptions on 10 targets for 15 yards.

Quarterback Tommy DeVito was more steady than Lock, but Brian Daboll's offense still left a bit to be desired.

Defense: A

On the exact opposite end of the spectrum, the Giants defense largely played well on Thursday night. However, there were some concerning penalties, which we'll address later on.

Shane Bowen's unit limited the Lions to just 228 yards of total offense (110 yards through the air), 3.9 yards per carry, and 3.4 yards per play while recording five QB hits, 4.0 sacks, eight tackles for a loss, eight passes defensed, and one interception.

Big Blue held the Lions to 5-of-17 on third down, 0-of-4 on fourth down, and 0-of-3 in the red zone.

Bowen also showcased some Wink Martindale-like blitzes which came as a surprise to the Lions' offense.

All in all, it was a good showing for the Giants' defense, which was largely made up of reserves.

Graham Gano and Jude McAtamney each connected on their respective point-after attempt (PAT) and punter Jamie Gillan booted seven for 319 yards (45.6 average) and dropped four inside the 20-yard line, but that's about where the positives end.

On their very first attempt at the new kickoff setup, the Giants were penalized for offensive holding, negating an Isaiah McKenzie 31-yard return.

McKenzie then added a fumble to his resume later in the game, while managing just one return for 26 yards.

The combination of McKenzie, Gunner Olszewski, and Ayir Asante also combined for just 33 yards on six punt returns, an average of 5.5 yards per.

Back on the plus side, the Giants fared well when kicking off themselves.

Given that this was the team's first taste of these new rules, a transition period was expected. It was a mixed bag on Thursday night but the Giants (and the rest of the NFL) will adjust.

The Giants were penalized 10 times for 102 yards, which is a direct reflection of the head coach. The lack of discipline was arguably the most glaring negative of the night, especially when considering the nature of some of the penalties.

Illegal formation, too many on the field, and a delay of game are all infractions that are easily avoidable. The substitution issues fall at the feet of the coordinators but the delay of game is Daboll's cross to bear.

Offensively, Daboll's unit also left a bit to be desired, as we noted above. But the defense shined under Bowen save for the aforementioned penalties, while special teams were a mixed bag for Michael Ghobrial.

And what did assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Mike Kafka do? That is the question.

Overall: B

Thursday's performance was relatively well-rounded for the Giants, although they'd like to see more out of their passing game.

The biggest takeaway was the play of the offensive line, which appears much more functional than a season ago. The added depth and quality of play are encouraging, especially for the reserves. The Giants would like to avoid any injuries to their starters but the insurance should relieve significant concern.

It was also encouraging to see a more stout run defense, which was an issue for the Giants last year. And while the Lions did rack up 118 rushing yards, they were held to 3.9 yards per carry.

The overall rushing total was also skewed by quarterback Hendon Hooker, who gained 34 yards on the ground and averaged 8.5 yards per carry.

There are obviously areas the Giants need to clean up, but this was a nice result in a measuring stick game against a team many believe is headed to the Super Bowl.
