Giants humiliate themselves on international stage, fall to Panthers in OT
The New York Giants and Carolina Panthers faced off on Sunday in Munich, Germany in the final game of this year's NFL International Series.
It was a matchup between a pair of 2-7 teams that could have a bearing on draft seeding come next April.
Here's how things played out...
Final score: Panthers 20, Giants 17, OT
Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Final | |
Giants | 0 | 0 | 7 | 10 | 0 | 17 |
Panthers | 7 | 3 | 7 | 0 | 3 | 20 |
Keys to the game
The Giants outgained the Panthers, 342-306, won the time of possession (34:29-27:38), and had more first downs (24-15) but went just 1-3 in the red zone and committed three fatal turnovers that essentially cost them the game.
The Panthers, specifically running back Chuba Hubbard, knifed through the Giants' defense on the ground to the tune of 188 rushing yards. The Giants had 167 rushing yards of their own but it seemed like the Panthers ran more effectively.
Giants quarterback Daniel Jones had a horrendous first half. He rebounded to lead them into overtime, but for the most part, his passes were off the mark and cost the team some possible big gains.
It was over when...
Rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. got stripped of the ball on the Carolina 24-yard line by former Giants defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson on the first possession of overtime. It was recovered by linebacker Josey Jewell on the 23. Four plays later, Eddy Pineiro hit the winning field goal from 36 yards out.
Players of the Game
Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. had another eye-opening game, rushing for 103 yards on 18 attempts with a touchdown. Unfortunately, Tracy would fumble the ball on the first possession of overtime leading to the winning field goal for Carolina.
Safety Tyler Nubin had another strong game, amassing 12 total tackles, one for a loss.
Edge rusher Brian Burns fought through a leg issue to record nine tackles, two for a loss and a sack.
Injuries
Rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers was escorted off the field after a 19-yard reception in the fourth quarter and checked for another concussion. Nabers missed Weeks 5 and 6 with a concussion. He returned to the game later in the drive.
Edge rusher Brian Burns injured his right leg chasing down Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard in the third quarter and walked off the field gingerly. He came back into the game two plays later. Burns has been dealing with leg issues for the past few weeks.
Cornerback Cor'Dale Flott appeared banged up in the fourth quarter but stayed on the field.
What's next?
Head coach Brian Daboll will hold a Zoom call with the team's beat writers on Monday afternoon before a few players are also made available.
Big Blue will then enjoy a much-needed bye week before returning to East Rutherford on Monday, November 18 as they prepare for a Week 12 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST.
