Giants' Brian Daboll never considered benching Daniel Jones and that's a problem
The New York Giants are going to sink or swim with starting quarterback Daniel Jones it seems.
Sink is more like it.
After losing to the worst defense in the NFL in the Carolina Panthers in Munich on Sunday, head coach Brian Daboll was still not convinced that Jones was his biggest hurdle to success.
"Obviously, we're not where we want to be," Daboll told reporters after the game. "We'll evaluate things in the bye week, do the things we need to do. We'll practice a couple days next week and evaluate everything."
After Jones stunk up the field in Munich, what's left to evaluate?
Don't get us wrong. Some Giants fans like Daniel but they also like winning. And he's not a winner. The Giants are 2-8 and going nowhere fast. Jones has a career record of 22-44-1. Is that defendable on any level?
Remember, this is Year 3 of the Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen regime. They are supposed to be competing for the postseason not the No.1 overall pick in next year's draft.
Jones was embarrassingly awful in the first half of Sunday's game, hanging onto the football too long, and missing out on opportunities for big plays while misfiring to wide-open receivers on others.
Yet Daboll admits he did not even entertain the notion of benching Jones. He's put too much work into him the past three summers. It hasn't been enough.
"I'd say we've got a lot of work to do here in the next few days, in the next week," he said. "And we'll evaluate where we're at and what we need to do."
Could that lead to a change at quarterback? The Giants' quarterback room doesn't exactly give fans the warm and fuzzies, either.
The prospect of having Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito under center likely has Daboll hesitant. It would also be a signal that he is surrendering the season and that's just not in his nature.
