The San Francisco Giants received some brutal news on Friday. Ace left-hander Madison Bumgarner was diagnosed with a fractured pitching hand after being hit with a comebacker during a Cactus League game against the Kansas City Royals.

Bumgarner was making his final appearance of the spring when he was struck by Whit Merrifield’s hard hit comebacker. The injury is described as a displaced fracture in his fifth metacarpal, or his pinky finger. He’ll have surgery on Saturday to place pins that will remain in place for four-to-six weeks. From that point, it would likely be a few more weeks before Bumgarner would return to the Giants rotation.
Bumgarner was scheduled to start San Francisco’s season opener on March 29 against Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The injury caps a tough week for San Francisco. The team also learned veteran right-hander Jeff Samardzija would begin the season on the disabled list with a strained pectoral muscle.
Bumgarner was among the most durable starters in MLB until last season, when he suffered a shoulder injury in a bike accident in Colorado. That injury cost Bumgarner three months. Though his injuries have fallen more under the fluke label, it’s at least a mild concern that ailments are starting to pile up.
