It's official: Giancarlo Stanton waives no-trade clause to complete Yankees deal
Get those pinstripes ready. Giancarlo Stanton is headed to the New York Yankees.
The reigning National League MVP officially waived his no-trade cause on Monday, thereby accepting a trade to New York and completing the Miami Marlins desperate bid to get out from under his contract. The Yankees will introduce Stanton at a press conference at 2 p.m. ET on Monday.
Prior to this deal coming together, Stanton had used his no-trade clause to block trades to the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants. The Yankees were one of four reported teams that Stanton would accept a trade to.
The Marlins will receive infielder Starlin Castro in the deals, along with prospects Jorge Guzman and Jose Devers. The trade is a practical giveaway by new Marlins owner Derek Jeter. That the Yankees swooped in and landed Stanton isn’t a great look for Jeter in his first months running the show. From the Yankees perspective, it takes many back 14 years when they acquired another reigning MVP during the offseason, Alex Rodriguez.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees will absorb $265 million of the $295 million owed to Stanton between now and 2027. However, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi adds the Marlins won’t send the Yankees any cash during the next three seasons. Their payments are conditional based on Stanton not opting out of the deal following the 2020 season.
Financial details aside, the Yankees are now prepared to enter the season with a lineup featuring Stanton, American League Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge and slugging catcher Gary Sanchez. Those three men by themselves combined to hit 144 home runs last season. That’s 16 more than the entire San Francisco Giants team.
It was a situation too good for Yankees general manager to pass up. And though many fans are frustrated that the Yankees ended up with another superstar, there’s no denying that every Yankees game is going to be an event with that lineup in place.
