Georgia football: Updating Bulldogs' college football poll rankings after win over Auburn

After a wild Saturday in which four top 10 teams in the The US LBM Coaches Poll lost, Georgia football is now the second highest ranked SEC team.

The Bulldogs moved up a spot from No. 5 to No. 4 after their 31-13 win over Auburn while three SEC teams that suffered their first losses slid down the rankings. Georgia is the highest ranked one-loss team.

Alabama fell from No. 2 to No. 7, Tennessee from No. 4 to No. 9 and Missouri from No. 9 to No.  18. No. 10 Michigan also dropped to No. 21.

In the Associated Press poll, Georgia stayed at No. 5. while Penn State moved up three spots to No. 4. The top three teams are the same as the coaches poll: No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Oregon.

Georgia (4-1) is back in Sanford Stadium Saturday for a 4:15 p.m. game against Mississippi State (1-4).

Georgia rankings update

In the coaches poll, the Bulldogs were behind No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Oregon. Following Georgia at No. 5 is Penn State. The rest of the top 10 is No. 6 Miami, No. 7 Alabama, No. 8 Ole Miss, No. 9 Tennessee and No. 10 LSU.

Georgia and Texas will play Oct. 19 in a much-anticipated matchup with big SEC and College Football Playoff implications. The Bulldogs rebounded from a 41-34 loss at Alabama by turning back Auburn.

"We beat a good team today," coach Kirby Smart said afterwards. "A resilient, tough, hard fought SEC win. They are hard to come by, and I think that's a really good football team we just played. I said that all week, when they don't turn the ball over, they're hard to beat."
