Georgia football: Observations from Bulldogs' fourth spring practice
Georgia football held its fourth spring practice on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs hit the field under sunny skies and 61 degree temperatures.
The team held its second full-pad practice. Coach Kirby Smart said the team will scrimmage on Saturday.
“A lot of competition out there,” Smart said. “As a whole, the overall field is probably younger than what I remember in the past. It may be the total number of new players in terms of mid-years (22 freshmen and six transfers). … It’s a lot of new faces out there. That’s the biggest difference but they’re progressing well.”
Here’s some observations from about 15 minutes of viewing time and some nuggets from Smart:

➤ Roderick Robinson is a handful. The sophomore running back, listed at 6-foot and 240 pounds, was too much for some players during a screen pass drill. In one rep, freshman cornerback Ellis Robinson bounced off him as Robinson headed towards the end zone.
➤ Raylen Wilson and CJ Allen are the top inside linebackers, with Smael Mondon sidelined after foot surgery, but Troy Bowles is making strides.
He had a good lick on a running back in the same drill.
“The guy that’s had a good spring so far is Bowles,” Smart said of the sophomore. “He didn’t get the benefit from his high school not letting him go midyear, he didn’t get the benefit of coming in with those guys. He’s just as good an athlete as those guys.”
Bowles looks like a special teams contributor first.
Freshman inside linebacker Justin Williams also made a sure tackle.
➤ Front seven players from Georgia’s defense did a three-man drill where they rushed towards the line of scrimmage and then ran quickly to the perimeter to get after a ball carrier.
“Run like Forrest Gump,” Smart shouted into a microphone in the indoor facility. “Do not turn and stop.”
➤ Miami transfer wide receiver Colbie Young is practicing through an ankle injury, Smart said, but you couldn’t tell from watching him go through drills.
He made a couple of nice catches, including one in the end zone as a drill ended.
➤ Freshman tight end Jaden Reddell has been slowed some by a hamstring injury.
“We’re trying to get him back out there best he can,” Smart said.
Freshman Colton Heinrich was the third team tight end Tuesday.
➤ The first defensive linemen hitting the sleds under the direction of assistant coach Tray Scott were Nazir Stackhouse, Warren Brinson and Christen Miller, followed by Jordan Hall and freshman Joseph Jonah-Ajonye. Zion Logue, preparing for the NFL draft, was watching,
➤ Rara Thomas, coming off foot surgery, was with the second-team receivers, along with Anthony Evans and Tyler William behind Dominic Lovett, Dillon Bell and Arian Smith.
➤ Freshman offensive Malachi Toliver is training at center, which Smart said is a new position for him.
➤ Smart said 700 to 800 coaches are expecting to a clinic later this week that features former Georgia Southern and current Houston coach Willie Fritz and Liberty coach Jamey Chadwell.
➤ Some high school teams were in attendance, including many players from Spartanburg (S.C.) High.
