Gavin Kash's grand slam ensures Texas Tech baseball series sweep of Houston

Scoring 10 runs across two innings was enough for the Texas Tech baseball team to finish off Big 12 series sweep of Houston with a 12-8 victory Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

Trailing 3-1, the Red Raiders (24-9, 8-7) plated seven runs in the third inning to take the lead for good, the bulk coming off a grand slam from Gavin Kash. Another three runs in the fourth provided the cushion to hold the Cougars (16-15, 4-11) at bay.

Tech finished the week winning all five games of its homestand, scoring at least 10 runs in each contest.

Up and down outing on mound for Mac Heuer

When starting pitcher Mac Heuer was able to find the strike zone, he was effective against the Cougars. Trouble was consistency on Sunday.

Heuer needed 35 pitches to get out of the first inning, which included three walks and giving up a two-run home run to Harold Coll. He settled in a bit after that, though he finished his outing with six walks and two hit batsmen in four-plus innings. He also struck out seven batters.

Red Raider offense continues to carry the load

A seven-run third inning opened the floodgates for Texas Tech. Austin Green had a pair of run-scoring singles before Gavin Kash took the first pitch he saw from Houston reliever Jose Torrealba over the fence in left-center field for a grand slam, his eighth homer of the season.

The Red Raiders added three more in the fourth inning with RBI base knocks from Drew Woodcox and TJ Pompey, ensuring Tech of double-digit runs in all five games on the home stand.

Two innings was good enough for the win

Houston reliever Cade Citelli entered the game in the fifth and shut down the Red Raider battery the rest of the way. In 3-1/3 innings of relief, he had six strikeouts and the only batter to reach base did so on an error by the shortstop.

But Citelli's solid outing didn't swing the game. Texas Tech had done enough at the plate in the middle innings to close a successful homestand.

Tech relief pitchers Zach Erdman, Josh Sanders, Cole Kaase and Parker Hutyra had enough of a cushion to work with. Erdman gave up three runs, though it wasn't enough to chip into what was an eight-run game in the fifth inning.

What's next?

The Red Raiders will hit the road for their next six games, starting with a Tuesday night contest at Abilene Christian beginning at 6:05 p.m. Texas Tech defeated ACU 9-4 in Lubbock on March 19.
