Gaudreau Tribute Gets Saddledome Season Going With Touching Emotion And Energy

It was as if Johnny Gaudreau's energy could be felt flowing through the building. The Calgary Flames' honoured their former superstar and hit all the right notes on Saturday night at the Saddledome for the franchise's home opener.

The tribute featured a coordinated lightshow and a stellar highlight package of some of Gaudreau's most incredible moments on the ice with the Flames, and ended with loud cheering and a 'Johnny' chant that gave the Dome an electric atmosphere.

Fittingly, the Flames were hosting Gaudreau's hometown favourite NHL team, the Philadelphia Flyers — who have been graced with some guest coaching by Gaudreau's dad, Guy Gaudreau, in recent weeks as the family attempts to heal from the tragic loss of brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau when they were hit by a car and killed on Aug. 29 while riding bicycles near their family home in Salem County, NJ.

Earlier, the Gaudreau family filmed an emotional video message with Guy and Jane Gaudreau wearing Flames gear.

Gaudreau was selected by the Flames in the fourth round at the 2011 NHL Draft and played nine of his 11 NHL seasons with Calgary before joining the Columbus Blue Jackets as a free agent. He's fifth in Flames franchise scoring with 609 points (210 goals, 399 assists) in 602 games.

"On behalf of the entire Gaudreau family, we want to express our deepest gratitude to our Calgary family,” Johnny's mom Jane Gaudreau said. “Your thoughts, your prayers, your cards, your gifts and your visits have meant the world to us. The love and support you have shown for John, Matty, and our entire family has helped us through the hardest time of our lives."

Making his first start of the season, Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf donned a new mask paying tribute to Gaudreau — including Skittles and purple Gatorade.
