Games to watch as PIAA playoffs head into high gear for PA high school football in Bucks
As we head into the semifinal round of the PIAA District One Class 6A playoffs, three of the four remaining high school football teams are from Bucks County and Eastern Montgomery County.
Top-seeded, and undefeated, Central Bucks South hosts No. 4 North Penn on Friday (7 p.m.) while No. 3 CB West heads to No. 2 Dowingtown West to play the Whippets (also on Friday at 7 p.m.).
Kudos to the District One power rankings as the top four seeds are still alive.
Also, Conwell-Egan continues on in the PIAA Class 3A bracket as the Eagles will face undefeated Northwestern Lehigh (of District 11) while Lansdale Catholic, in PIAA Class 2A, will tangle with one-loss Riverside (of District Two). Both games are also Friday at 7 p.m.
So here we go with the games to watch:
PIAA District One Class 6A semifinals
(4) North Penn (10-2) at (1) Central Bucks South (12-0), Friday, 7 p.m.
They didn't know it then, but they probably had a good idea.
Then was Oct. 4 when the Titans topped the Knights 14-6 in their Suburban One League National Conference matchup.
It was also then (and maybe earlier) when both coaches realized the powerhouse teams might meet again in the PIAA District One Class 6A playoffs.
And, sure enough, here we go with the winner here headed to next week's district final.
In the first meeting, it was defense that ruled the day as the Titans limited the Knights to 100 yards of offense and a pair of Ryan Bocklet field goals while the Knights held the Titans to 130 rushing yards in a game that was 7-6 after three quarters.
Last week in the quarterfinals, the Titans, who have allowed the fewest points of any Class 6A team in the state (78) and are two wins away from defending their district title, blanked a solid Plymouth Whitemarsh side 35-0.
That score is even more impressive when you consider the Colonials' only losses coming into last week came against Wilson and Manheim Township, two District Three teams that are still alive in the postseason.
The Knights eliminated No. 5 Haverford High 29-21 in last week's quarterfinals as junior running back Matt Pownall ran for 138 yards and two scores while also catching a touchdown pass.
North Penn is seeking its first district title since 2016.
Up next: The winner will face the winner of (3) Central Bucks West/(2) Downingtown West in the PIAA District One Class 6A championship game. The loser will be eliminated.

PIAA District One Class 6A semifinals
(3) Central Bucks West at (2) Downingtown West, Friday, 7 p.m.
In Rob Rowan's seven seasons as the Bucks' head coach, his teams had never played either Downingtown East or West.
That's changed.
Last week, CB West took out Downingtown East 35-21 in the quarterfinals and this week the Bucks will tangle with the Whippets, last year's district runner-up to CB South, with a spot in next week's district championship game on the line.
Against the Cougars, the Bucks used a stingy defense (they allowed just 51 rushing yards) and scored on three straight second-half possessions to turn a 14-14 game at halftime into a comfortable 35-14 lead late in the fourth quarter.
Senior quarterback Noah Miller led West with 171 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns and senior Vance Morelli returned a blocked field goal 70 yards for a score to help the Bucks pull away.
The Whippets, who have won four straight games, had no trouble in their quarterfinal last week as they crunched No. 7 Owen J. Roberts 41-7.
Downingtown West's only loss came against Class 4A Bishop Shanahan 28-22 in Week Eight.
The Bucks are looking for their first district title since 2000 while the Whippets last won the district crown in 2019.
Up next: The winner will face the winner of (4) North Penn/(1) Central Bucks South in the PIAA District One Class 6A championship game. The loser will be eliminated.
PIAA Class 3A first round
Conwell-Egan (8-3) at Northwestern Lehigh (12-0), Friday, 7 p.m.
The Eagles head into their first-round state matchup on a roll as winners of six straight games in which they've allowed only 31 total points to go along with three shutouts.
Last week, in the PIAA District 12 title game, their defense was strong again as they limited Philadelphia Public League champion Simon Gratz to just 12 points in a 24-12 win. It was the first city title in six years for C-E.
Junior Abu Fofana sparked the Eagles' defense with a pair of interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown.
As for the Tigers, they're coming off a 2023 season that saw them reach the PIAA title game and go 15-1 with the lone loss coming in the state final.
And they've picked up where they've left off this season led by a defense that has allowed only 72 points (six per game), which is the lowest of any PIAA Class 3A team in the state.
All told, the Tigers have shut out four opponents and only two teams (Southern Lehigh and Saucon Valley) have scored double-digit points against them.
Last week, Northwestern Lehigh thumped North Schuylkill 36-7 in the PIAA District 11 championship game.
In that one, senior running back Eli Zimmerman, who is closing in on 2,000 rushing yards for the season, scored three touchdowns and led a ground game that piled up 384 yards.
Up next: The winner will face the winner of Scranton Prep/Wyoming Area in the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals. The loser will be eliminated.

PIAA Class 2A first round
Lansdale Catholic (8-4) vs. Riverside (11-1), Friday, 7 p.m. (at Mid Valley High School)
Since closing the regular season with a 16-9 loss against Class 3A Neumann-Goretti, the Crusaders have kicked it up in the postseason by dispatching Kipp-Dubois (42-14) in the PIAA District 12 title game and then upending Bristol 35-17 in last week's PIAA District One/12 Regional Championship game to reach the PIAA playoffs for the first time in seven seasons.
Against the Warriors, junior quarterback Yeboa Cobbold threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as LC erased an early 3-0 deficit and was able to pull away by early in the third quarter.
Cobbold finished with 223 passing yards and no interceptions.
The Vikings of Riverside (District Two), who are averaging over 36 points a game, have allowed only 13 total points in two playoff games (wins over Lakeland and Dunmore) and are coming off a 24-6 victory over Dunmore in the PIAA District Two title game last week.
Senior quarterback Chase Taddonio led the way in the win with 164 rushing yards and three touchdowns to help give the Vikings their first district title since 2010.
Taddonio, who threw his first interception of the season last week, has thrown for over 5,000 yards in his career with 71 touchdown passes.
Up next: The winner will face the winner of Schuylkill Haven/Williams Valley in the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinals. The loser will be eliminated.
