FSU softball freshman star Jaysoni Beachum earns honor from Softball America
The first month of Jaysoni Beachum's career has gotten off to a great start.
The Florida State softball freshman third baseman hit for over a .500 batting average in the first month of her softball career.
On Tuesday, Softball America named Beachum the February-March Freshman Player of the Month. She was honored along with Stanford pitcher NiJaree Canady (February-March Pitcher of the Month), Texas' Reese Atwood (February-March Player of the Month) and Florida's Keagan Rothrock (February-March Freshman Pitcher of the Month.
"Beachum has made an instant impact on Florida State’s lineup. The third baseman currently leads the Seminoles in batting average and RBI. It’s not often a freshman can hit over .500 in their first month but the future is bright for Beachum," Softball America wrote.
The publication named Beachum, a former Florida High standout, as a player to watch ahead of the season.
"It's definitely an honor. When I saw it, I was pretty excited," Beachum told the Democrat about winning the honors on Tuesday. "But I also just need to remember we have to keep our focus on the FGCU tournament this weekend."
FSU went 11-3 in February-March, seeing Beachum make her mark early on. She hit two or her four home runs in a single game against Nicholls on Feb. 24.
The Seminoles, who fell to 11-4 with a 6-5 loss to Jacksonville at Rattler Field Sunday, play five games in the FGCU Spring Break Classic in Fort Myers. They open the tournament with a 12:15 p.m. matchup against Purdue on Friday.
Beachum has played a large role in the success of the FSU offense. FSU head coach Lonni Alameda is impressed with her freshman.
"It's a huge deal," Alameda said of Beachum winning the honors. "Jaysoni, as you guys know, is very calm, cool and collected. She's a pretty old soul. She'll take her little smile and keep working. She just loves softball and loves everything about it.
"She's a high achiever in that sense and I don't see her jumping around and having ice cream. She just gets what she gets after and that's getting the opportunity to play again this weekend."
