FSU football tight end Jaheim Bell ready to face familiar foe in Clemson | The NoleBook

Jaheim Bell knows Clemson.

Bell transferred from the Tigers' rival South Carolina to Florida State this offseason. He was on the Gamecocks team that upset Clemson in Death Valley 31-30 to end last regular season.

FSU head coach Mike Norvell and his staff have been ramping up the crowd noise to mimic the noise that could cause disruptions for the Seminoles in a tough road environment. The No. 4 Seminoles (3-0, 1-0 ACC) take on the Tigers (2-1, 0-1) at noon Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina.

"It's close," Bell said of the simulated volume to the actual volume at Death Valley. "But once you hit them in the mouth, that's going away. Once you do that, the crowd has nothing to be excited about. Once you hit them in the mouth a few times, it'll be fine."

Punch them in the mouth is what the Gamecocks did last season. After Clemson held a 14-0 at the end of the first and a 23-14 lead at the end of the third, USC mounted a comeback to win.

Bell had nine carries for 29 yards and a score and two catches for two yards in the victory over the Tigers a season ago. His touchdown from two yards out cut the score to 23-21 in the third quarter.

"It's a real high environment game," Bell said of playing at Clemson. "There's a lot of emotions. But you have to find a way to put that to the side and do the right things. High emotions can cause you to do things you normally wouldn't. You have to find a way to stay focused."

Clemson opened the season with an upset loss to Duke (28-7) in Durham, North Carolina. The Tigers have bounced back to beat Charleston Southern and Florida Atlantic by a combined 114-31 score in the past two weeks.

Head coach Dabo Swinney warned that previous games don't matter when dealing with FSU-Clemson games.

"This is Clemson-Florida State. It doesn't matter what your record is, it doesn't matter who won last year, doesn't matter what you're ranked," Swinney said Monday at his press conference. "This is a game that you better show up.

On the first play following an interception from DJ Lundy at the BC 45, quarterback Jordan Travis hit Bell for a 45-yard pass which should have resulted in a touchdown.

Instead, Bell was ruled down at the one-yard line, and following a replay review, the call on the field stood. On the next play, Lundy went in for the score playing fullback.

Bell said he watched the replay "four or five times" and still doesn't understand how he didn't get the touchdown call.

"I ain't going to lie, that kind of pissed me off," Bell said. "I tried everything to get in the end zone. There was no explanation when I asked the ref."

Here are observations from the Democrat writers in attendance for Wednesday's practice ahead of the Week 4 matchup.

Observations from FSU's Wednesday's practice ahead of Clemson

  • Scouts from the Arizona Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans

  • During indoor 11vs11 drills, crowd noise ramped up again. Jordan Travis is going to the line to call plays before each play. First throw was behind Keon Coleman. Second throw to Lawrance Toafili for a minimal gain. Mike Norvell calls a 10-second runoff due to a penalty on offense. Travis hits Kyle Morlock down the middle for a huge gain. Gilber Edmond would have had a sack if live, but Travis gets a throw-off with Jarrian Jones defending it to break it up.

  • Crowd noise still going on outside 11vs11. Patrick Payton gets inside pressure to force Travis out of pocket and to scramble.

  • Trey Benson runs a good counter for a big gain. Good blocking and leverage to open a hole.

  • Travis to Coleman with Greedy Vance draped on him.

  • Tate Rodemaker throws to Toafili, but Kalen DeLoach comes in last second with a good PBU.

  • Rodemaker under heavy pressure fires a ball deep to Hykeem Williams but falls incomplete. Norvell yells at him to be helping the QB when he's scrambling like that.

  • Rodemaker hits Williams on the next play, where Williams sits down on the route to catch the ball but it's short of the first down to gain marker.

  • Destyn Hill struggles to get open with press coverage from Vance.

  • Markeston Douglas pushes off on Justin Cryer and Norvell emphatically calls it OPI. He talks to Douglas, they watch the highlight together and then he runs back to the other side with him.

  • Outside offense vs. scout drill, the crowd noise is back again. On the first play, Travis throws a screen to Bell. Good defense prevents a longer run after the catch.

  • Noise causes a false start. Norvell is angry.

  • Good catch from Destyn Hill. Throw a little out in front, he brings in with one hand and wraps up to complete the catch.

  • Crowd noise is still blaring inside during 11vs11 red zone drills. Travis rips a ball to the middle of the field to hit Coleman for a TD.

  • Norvell talks to Bell about something after he catches a ball from Travis and is tackled out of bounds.

  • CJ Campbell comes wide open out of the backfield to catch a TD pass from Rodemaker. A good route to get open.

  • Campbell with a good run up the middle. Shows off a burst and vision to find the hole.

  • Travis still communicating at the line. He hits Coleman on a comeback route. Coleman won't go catchless again.

  • Travis good throw to Williams. Hit him in the middle of the field for a huge gain
