FSU baseball is 10-0 for the 13th time. Our takeaways from First Pitch Invitational
Florida State baseball is off to a 10-0 start for the 13th time in program history.
It's the best start for the Seminoles since a 12-0 start to the 2019 season following a weekend sweep of Michigan State (11-2), Illinois (13-7) and Western Michigan (8-3) over the weekend in the First Pitch Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
FSU, which is one of five undefeated Division I teams, has outscored its three opponents 32-12 over the weekend and owns a run-differential of plus-runs to start the season.
The Seminoles take on Florida Gulf Coast (4-7) at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Dick Howser Stadium for a midweek game. Tuesday's contest was set for 6 p.m. but was canceled Monday due to weather expected in the area Tuesday.
Here are our takeaways from the weekend and a look ahead at Tuesday's game.
Jamie Arnold continues his perfect start; Cam Leiter struggles
Following a rainout in Friday's games, Arnold started the first game of a doubleheader against Michigan State and picked up off his last two starts.
Arnold (3-0, 0.00 ERA) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and picked up seven strikeouts. Though he scattered hits throughout his outing, the Spartans were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position against the left-handed sophomore.
Through 17 innings in 2024, Arnold has yet to allow an earned run and has allowed just one run all year. He has 27 strikeouts and walked just two hits, allowing 10 hits. He entered the weekend sixth nationally in strikeouts and should climb when the NCAA updates leaders.
Cam Leiter (2-0, 3.86) had his start pushed back a day due to the weather and pitched the second game of FSU's doubleheader. He struggled, allowing five earned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking four in four innings.
Righty Ben Barrett (1-0) pitched 3 ⅔ relief innings to pick up the win in the nightcap. Barrett had a 1.86 ERA in 9 innings this season.
In the Sunday getaway game, true freshman left-hander Matt Sauser made his first career start. Sauser allowed a lead-off walk (which scored) and a home run in the second inning before left-hander Andrew Armstrong came on in relief.
Armstrong (1-0) picked up the win, going 1 ⅔ innings, allowing no hits and no runs, while striking out three. Brennen Oxford struck out four in three innings to pick up his second save of the season.
Offense continues to hum along
James Tibbs III hit his sixth home run of the season and the FSU offense kept on humming along to start the season. Tibbs's home run came against Illinois and went 419 feet and was hit 105 miles per hour off his bat.
The power also came from Jaime Ferrer, who had a pair of home runs over the weekend, his first two of the season. Alex Lodise hit his first home run with the Seminoles, while Cam Smith hit his second homer of the year, but it came in the variety of an inside-the-park one.
Leadoff hitter DeAmez Ross set a career-high with three walks and reached safely in 5 of 6 plate appearances (2-for-3) during the doubleheader. He also added two stolen bases in Sunday's game. He's 5-of-5 on steals this team and the Seminoles are 20 of 21.
FSU has had a player with at least three hits in all 10 games to begin the season. Smith has five three-hit games and is sitting at a career-high 14-game hitting streak.
Max Williams hit his second triple of the season Sunday and FSU has seven triples. It entered the weekend 6th nationally in three-baggers.
FSU baseball ranked in three top-25 polls
The 10-0 start has the Seminoles beginning to garner respect around the country in year two under head coach Link Jarrett.
FSU was ranked No. 25 in the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll.
Perfect Game, which had FSU ranked at No. 24 last week, moved them up to No. 19 this week. Baseball America ranked FSU No. 24, its first ranking in the poll this year.
D1Baseball did not rank the Seminoles.
FSU is ranked No. 15 in RPI rankings through March 3.
Series preview vs. Florida Gulf Coast
With Tuesday's game rained out, the Seminoles take on the Eagles for a single game now Wednesday. Conner Whittaker (1-0, 3.18 ERA) is expected to make his third start of the season.
He has 14 strikeouts and two walks in 11 ⅓ innings, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits. With the Seminoles likely coming in with the mentality of needing arms for two games instead of one for the midweek, they likely will have multiple arms available.
The Eagles began the season by being swept by TCU on the road and 0-4 following a loss to Indiana State. They have gone 3-3 since, including a 12-10 win over Miami in Coral Gables on Jan. 30.
FGCU is coming off a weekend three-game series loss to Xavier at home this past weekend.
The Seminoles lead the all-time series 12-7 but saw the Eagles take two out of three games last year in a weekend series.
Ian Farrow leads FGCU with his .422 batting average, five home runs and 15 RBI, good for a 1.376 OPS. Harrison Povey also has three home runs and Jacob Lojewski is hitting .340 with two home runs. The Eagles have 14 home runs as a team.
It is unclear who will pitch for FGCU for the single game, but its top three starters have all struggled this season. Chae Kriebel has a 4.97 ERA across 12 ⅔ innings with nine strikeouts and five walks. Nick Love has a 5.40 ERA in 15 innings with 11 strikeouts and four walks.
Justin Henschel has a 10.22 ERA in 12 ⅓ innings with five strikeouts and nine walks.
The FSU offense should feel confident entering the series.
