Former Sharks Defenseman Cut From Senators Training Camp

Many players across the NHL are trying to earn a contract through a PTO. One of them happened to be former San Jose Sharks defenseman Calen Addison.

Addison joined the Senators on Sept. 6 on a tryout basis, hoping to save his NHL career. As an RFA this offseason, GM Mike Grier and the Sharks let the d-man walk to UFA status rather than qualify him and try to re-sign him.

Addison played three games in the preseason for Ottawa and did not register a point. He finished as a -2 and had three shots on goal.

The 24-year-old joined the Sharks via trade with the Minnesota Wild last season and had one goal and 16 assists between the two teams. In 60 games with the Sharks, he had one goal and 11 assists.

The Senators have a stacked blue line with Thomas Chabot and Jake Sanderson, but as a right-side defenseman, Addison had a better opportunity to make the team and earn a contract. Ottawa selected standout defenseman Carter Yakemchuk in the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft.

Yakemchuk has had a stellar preseason, which might've pushed Addison out of a possible NHL spot.

Addison now returns to the free agent market.
