Former Lakers guard says team should've kept Dennis Schroder in 2023

In the spring of 2023, the Los Angeles Lakers had plenty of positive momentum after trading beleaguered and ill-fitting guard Russell Westbrook for D'Angelo Russell and Jarred Vanderbilt in February. They went all the way to the Western Conference Finals, and the decision was made that summer to prioritize continuity rather than making significant changes for a fourth straight offseason.

However, while Russell, Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura were given new contracts, Dennis Schroder wasn't. The key reserve guard left in free agency, and the Lakers signed Gabe Vincent to a three-year, $33 million deal to essentially be Schroder's replacement.

Fast forward to November 2024, and Vincent is having lots of trouble finding the basket. The gritty guard is shooting just 29.7% from the field and 17.4% from 3-point range, and some Lakers fans are starting to think the team made a mistake by choosing him over Schroder.

That is the sentiment former Laker Nick Young expressed on X (formerly Twitter) when he said L.A. should've paid Schroder before every player other than Reaves during the summer of 2023.

Schroder averaged 14.0 points and 6.1 assists a game and made 37.5% of his 3-point attempts last season as a member of the Toronto Raptors. Through 10 games this season, he's putting up 20.1 points and 6.6 dimes a game while shooting 48.6% from the field and 46.3% from downtown.

There is little doubt that just about every Lakers fan would happily swap Vincent for the German native right now.
