Former Kansas football player Joe Krause’s next hearing canceled after diversion approval
LAWRENCE — A diversion agreement has been approved by the district attorney in the case concerning former Kansas football player Joe Krause, according to a Douglas County District Court administrative assistant.
Krause, arrested back in July of 2023 for allegedly committing aggravated criminal threat, was set to have his next hearing on Jan. 10. According to the administrative assistant, a stay order has been approved by the judge and that upcoming hearing has been canceled. There are no future hearings scheduled.
A records request has been made for details of the diversion agreement, but according to an affidavit Krause’s arrest stemmed from the University of Kansas’ police department responding to a reference of a bomb threat on July 24, 2023. Through an anonymous message system KU Athletics uses called RealResponse, messages had been received from an anonymous account that were of a self-harm and threatening nature. A KU Public Safety Office detective had spoken with a deputy athletic director about the messages, which had a final one that read, “There is a bomb at the football facilities.”
KU Athletics then provided a phone number and address for Krause. Contact was made with Krause at Krause’s residence. Lawrence Police Department officers were a part of that effort.
The alleged threat had led to the Anderson Family Football Complex and other football facilities to be evacuated. Later on, the affidavit continued, there was an official “all clear” call. According to a separate document, the complaint, for the one count of aggravated criminal threat Krause initially faced a penalty range that was “from a minimum of 31 months to a maximum of 136 months in prison and/or a fine of up to $300,000 and 24 months of post-release supervision, pursuant to K.S.A. 21-6804, 21-6807, 21-6611(a)(2), & 22-3717(d)(1)(B), and amendments thereto.”
As Krause’s case proceeded, a KU Athletics spokesperson outlined Krause was no longer a member of the football program or a student at the school. He had only appeared in two games in 2020, and none across 2021 or 2022.
