Brock Vandagriff transfer update: Former Georgia football QB staying in the SEC

Georgia football could line up against a familiar face next season when it plays at Kentucky.

Quarterback Brock Vandagriff announced via social media Wednesday he’s heading to Lexington to play for the Wildcats.

The former Prince Avenue Christian star who was a backup with the Bulldogs for three seasons revealed his decision two days after going into the transfer portal.

Vandagriff joins a Kentucky program with an offensive coordinator Liam Coen with NFL experience.

"What they did with Will Levis is a lot like what Brock can do as a quarterback," Greg Vandagriff, Brock's father and the Prince Avenue Christian head coach, told the Athens Banner-Herald. "It sort of meets his quarterback traits. Coen came highly recommended."

Coen coached with the Los Angeles Rams for three seasons before serving as offensive coordinator at Kentucky in 2021 and went back to the Rams for a season as coordinator before returning to Kentucky this past season.

Levis from Kentucky was an early second-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans this year. He threw for 2,827 yards and 24 touchdowns and rushed for 376 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior under Coen.

Kentucky's starting quarterback in 2023 was N.C. State transfer Devin Leary who is considered an NFL draft prospect in 2024. Asked if it was important to say in the region or the SEC, Greg Vandagriff said: "All about opportunity."

Brock Vandagriff highlights

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Vandagriff, a former five-star recruit, brings the ability to make plays with his feet as well as his arm.

Vandagriff completed 12 of 18 passes for 165 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception while also rushing for 46 yards on 5 carries this season.

He was among those backing up Stetson Bennett for two seasons and was the top backup to Carson Beck this year.

Beck is weighing whether to return or enter the NFL draft, but Vandagriff's move could be viewed as a sign of which way that's heading.

"We couldn't control what's going on at Georgia," Greg Vandagriff said. "He's behind a kid that won two national championships and one that's possibly a first-round draft pick so at this point in his career, he need to get on the field."
