Former Cardinals, Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt hired by Memphis Showboats

The Memphis Showboats have a new coach and general manager.

Ken Whisenhunt has been named coach of the UFL's Showboats, the league announced on Monday. Jim Monos was named general manager.

Whisenhunt replaces John DeFilippo, who went 2-8 in his only season as coach. Memphis finished second to last in the UFL, starting the season with a win before losing eight straight.

He has extensive coaching experience, having served as coach of the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans. He helped take the Cardinals to the Super Bowl in 2009.

Monos replaces Dennis Polian, who stepped down as GM this summer. He has NFL experience and recently worked for the XFL and AAF spring football leagues.

“We are very excited to welcome Ken Whisenhunt and Jim Monos to the UFL family,” UFL executive vice president for football operations Daryl Johnston said in a team release. “Jim was part of the New Orleans Saints personnel department when they won Super Bowl XLIV and Ken was the offensive coordinator with Pittsburgh when they won Super Bowl XL and as head coach was 35 seconds from leading the Arizona Cardinals to a Championship over the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII. The Showboats have two foundational pieces in place as they prepare for UFL Season 2.”

The UFL is the result of the merger between the XFL and USFL. The Showboats, formerly a USFL team, play home games at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. The UFL's second season is set to kickoff on March 28, 2025.
