Former Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson hospitalized over weekend with a stroke
Former Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson was hospitalized over the weekend with a minor stroke.
The university confirmed the news Monday afternoon in a statement.
“Coach Olson is not only an icon of our men’s basketball program and all of college basketball, but he is also an embodiment of greatness to Arizona Athletics, the University of Arizona and the Tucson community,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with Coach Olson, his family and loved ones during this time.”
The Arizona Daily Star reports that the 84-year-old is in good condition.
Doctor: Olson expected to make full recovery
“He is expected to make a full recovery but will likely need some rehabilitation therapy after his discharge from the hospital,” Dr. David Labiner announced in a news release.
Olson was admitted to the Banner University Medical Center in Tucson on Saturday, according to the report.
Olson coached at Arizona from 1983 to 2007, overseeing the rise to national prominence of the Wildcats program.

He was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year seven times and led Arizona to the 1997 national championship. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.
Prior to joining Arizona, Olson coached at Iowa from 1974 to 1983.
