Forced indoors, Florida State football shows 'feistiness' in seventh spring practice

Florida State football was stuck indoors for Tuesday's practice.

It was the second time the team was forced to practice indoors due to inclement weather during spring practices. Even so, coming off a successful scrimmage last Saturday, there was a little bit more energy for FSU players during the practice.

Everything got interesting on a play linebacker Brendan Gant made an interception in the end zone on a pass from quarterback Jordan Travis.

The pass was intended for tight end Markeston Douglas. He and safety Shyheim Brown tussled for about 30 seconds on the ground before being separated.

From there, the defense and offense were chippy on both sides during 7-on-7 and team drills.

The chippiness was something coach Mike Norvell enjoyed. But he also said the team has to be disciplined.

"We have one team and one family. I know with family members sometimes, especially when you're constantly competing against each other sometimes you get a little feisty," Norvell said.

"There was some feistiness. But I want respect. Ultimately that is where guys are in control of themselves and the situation.

"Absolutely. And that's where I try to create it. I came in today and my purpose was to see if I could get them out of their element for a certain period of time. Some of them I succeeded But it's about the follow-up too."

The Seminoles return to practice Thursday and are likely to return to a normal routine with better weather expected.

Thursday's practice will be the eighth of the spring, putting the team just over the halfway point of a 15-practice spring. The team will hold its second of two scrimmages Saturday.

Here are three takeaways, observations and what was said following the seventh spring practice for the Seminoles.

Brendan Gant's big practice and other practice observations

Gant's interception of Travis wasn't the only time he factored into practice. The redshirt senior also snuffed out a run play in the red zone. He perfectly timed a linebacker blitz and got to the backfield to drop running back Rodney Hill for a loss on the play.

Earlier in the practice, Gant also got into the backfield to take down Hill for another loss. When he wasn't making tackles, Gant was all over the field and continuously around the ball.

A few other notes from practice:

  • Wide receiver Johnny Wilson made a great downfield block on a big run by Hill. Wilson made a highlight reel catch in the red zone, coming down with a ball and keeping his balance to stay in bounds.

  • Freshman Vandrevius Jacobs continues to impress during practices. While he was heavily draped in the red zone, he contorted and adjusted for a ball to come down for a touchdown, keeping his feet in bounds.

  • Kentron Poitier was another standout at receiver, routinely winning on his routes to get open or making contested catches. He was a recipient of a perfect throw from Tate Rodemaker between two defenders in the red zone. He also added a leaping, contested catch over Azareye'h Thomas.

  • Cypress Fentrell had a couple of standout moments, including shutting down Potitier on a route. He

  • Safety Travis Jay broke up a pass in the red zone intended for Douglas.

  • Defensive end Byron Turner tipped a ball at the line of scrimmage on a throw from Travis.

Tate Rodemaker's best practice

Rodemaker's day started with the perfectly placed ball to Poitier in the end zone and he continued to excel from there.

He placed a ball where only Hill could get to on a wheel route. He then hit tight end Kyle Morlock on a throw over the middle with linebacker Omar Graham, Jr. draped over him in coverage.

Rodemaker later hit Poitier on a deep shot to the five-yard line to set his team in a first-and-goal situation. A couple of plays later, he found a wide-open Brian Courtney in the end zone to cap off his drive.

Norvell was pleased with the work of his backup QB for last season.

"I thought today Tate had a really good day," Norvell said. "He's confident in what we're asking him to do. He's very talented and it's just a matter of him trusting his eyes, trusting his feet and being able to make the plays when the opportunities are there.

"Sometimes the best play is a throwaway or killing a ball if somebody gets immediate pressure. Some of the next level thinking and reactions is where I think he is really growing."

Jared Verse improving techniques

Verse bypassed an opportunity to turn pro, despite having a good opportunity to be a first-round pick in the NFL Draft in April.

Instead, he came back to college to have a chance to win with the Seminoles, as well as a chance to boost his NFL stock.

Norvell is one of the people who already believe he's seeing improvements from the redshirt senior.

"Jared, seven practices in one of the things I'm most proud of him with is you're seeing the technique improve," Norvell said. "You're seeing more consistency in the fundamentals. He's embraced that."
