Florida State redshirt junior defensive back announces he will enter NCAA Transfer Portal
For the second time in three days, the Florida State football defense and particularly the secondary has taken a hit.
Redshirt junior safety Travis Jay announced his decision to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal on Saturday afternoon.
"I am officially in the transfer portal," his tweet read.
I am officially in the transfer portal!!

Jay, who is from Greenville and attended the local Madison County High, did not play at all last season, working with the scout team.
In 2021, he played in 10 games, including one start, recording 17 tackles, two interceptions and four pass breakups. He also added 104 yards on four kickoff returns.

He appeared in six games with two starts and recorded 26 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble in 2020, while also gaining 229 yards on 10 kickoff returns and 20 yards on two punt returns
He redshirted in 2019 and played on the scout team.
Jay was a player who showed improvement and his potential during the early portions of spring football but dealt with an undisclosed injury and was not seen during the latter half of the practices.
Travis Jay's success at Madison County High
In his senior season, he lined up in the defensive backfield and at quarterback at Madison County. He finished high school with a career record of 38-2 and was part of back-to-back 1A state championships.
He was the Big Bend Offensive Player of the Year for the 2018 season, completing 60% of his passes for 1,334 yards with 13 touchdowns versus just four interceptions, and he rushed for 1,096 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Jay also played every down defensively and finished with 46 tackles, five interceptions, 15 pass breakups and returned two fumbles for touchdowns.
He was ranked as the No. 14 cornerback in the country by ESPN and 17th at the position by 247Sports during the 2019 recruiting class.
What it means
Defensive back Omarion Cooper entered the transfer portal earlier this week. He had moved from cornerback to safety.
Offensive lineman Zane Herring, who played at Madison County, entered the portal five days ago. The redshirt sophomore appeared in a reserve role in all 13 games last season.
The list also includes defensive lineman Derrick McLendon, who announced his decision to leave FSU in mid-March; linebacker Brendan Gant, who decided to enter on April 17; redshirt freshman defensive lineman Antavious Woody, who entered on April 18; and redshirt sophomore linebacker Stephen Dix Jr., who entered April 19.
Jay earned praise from head coach Mike Norvell early on in camp.
Now with his departure, the FSU safety room is thinner behind likely starters Akeem Dent and Shyheim Brown.
Early enrollee freshman KJ Kirkland had a strong spring and is looking at a bigger role now after a strong spring performance. Four-star Conrad Hussey is set to arrive in the summer to solidify the depth.
It wouldn't be a shock if FSU looks to add another safety through the portal, as it looks to continue to replace NFL-bound Jammie Robinson, who was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in Round 5 Saturday.
