Florida basketball's Keyontae Johnson accused of sexual assault
Keyontae Johnson, the Florida basketball star who has not played since a scary collapse in 2020, is being investigated for an alleged sexual assault during a pool party last month, according to WUFT in Gainesville.
Johnson reportedly has not been arrested, but was formally accused by police of having sex with a "heavily intoxicated" woman in his apartment. He faces a preliminary charge of sexual battery while the State Attorney’s Office decides whether to formally indict him.
Johnson's name should be familiar to basketball fans, as he made national headlines last season when he collapsed on the court during a game. The SEC preseason player of the year that season, Johnson has not appeared on the court since that collapse outside of a ceremonial start during the Gators' senior night earlier this month.
The collapse was reportedly caused by acute myocarditis, and could have been much worse had a cardiologist not been sitting courtside.
The allegation against Keyontae Johnson
Johnson's accuser is reportedly described by police as a 19-year-old friend with whom he previously had consensual intercourse as recently as August, but had since declined to have sex with him despite multiple requests.
The incident reportedly occurred on Feb. 26, when the accuser, who is not a Florida student, attended a party at Johnson's apartment complex amid a night of heavy drinking. Police claim she asked to use the bathroom in Johnson's apartment, but did not remember walking to his home.
The accuser did, however, claim to remember Johnson lying down on top of her in the apartment and asking if she had been recently tested for any sexually transmitted diseases. Two of the accuser's friends reportedly texted her to ask where she was roughly 30 minutes after she left for the apartment. The accuser called one back five minutes later to say she was walking back and was seen moments later unable to stand on her own and vomiting in the bushes.
The accuser reportedly told police she woke up at 4 a.m. the next day feeling like she recently had intercourse, then underwent a sexual assault exam and contacted police a day later.
Police reportedly listened to a subsequent phone call between the accuser and Johnson, in which he allegedly acknowledged having unprotected sex with her while she was drunk.
