Five games to watch in Week Three of PA high school football in Bucks County
As we enter Week Three of the 2024 Pa. high school football season in Bucks County and Eastern Montgomery County, we're starting to learn a lot more about our area teams.
And we're also just a week away from the start of the conference season for most of our PIAA teams.
Let's take a look at the top five games (all Friday night) to watch for Week Three in Bucks County:
Council Rock South (1-1) at Pennsbury (1-1), 6 p.m.
Two teams with PIAA District One Class 6A playoff aspirations go at it here.
The Golden Hawks won their opener over Frankford before falling to 2-0 North Penn last week while the Falcons lost their opener to Northampton, but bounced back with a win over Quakertown last week.
The Golden Hawks could do little offensively against the Knights as they dropped a 34-6 decision that didn't see them get on the board until the closing seconds of the fourth quarter. Council Rock South was held to under 200 yards of offense and had just nine first downs.
Junior Shane Myers led the Golden Hawks offense with 94 rushing yards while junior tight end Nate Szydlik caught six passes for 24 yards and also had a sack from his linebacker spot.
Pennsbury, which beat CR South 28-19 a year ago, fell behind the Panthers early in the second quarter in their last game 7-0, but would not allow another point in what turned out to be a 17-7 win.
The Falcons used their trademark punishing ground game to notch the victory as Jordan Brensinger and Jaydyn Bright each ran for 133 yards and a touchdown.
Central Bucks East (1-1) at Council Rock North (0-2), 7 p.m.
The Patriots picked up their first win of the season in style last week by knocking off Cheltenham 42-26 thanks to a record-breaking performance from sophomore running back Mike Price.
All Price did was score all six Patriots touchdowns with five coming on the ground and the other via a touchdown pass on a halfback option.
The six scores set a school single-game record and the five rushing touchdowns tied a school single-game mark. He finished with a game-high 191 rushing yards.
As for the Indians, who didn't face the Patriots a year ago, they fell behind Neshaminy 34-0 before notching the game's final two scores in what turned out to be a 34-13 defeat.
Senior wide receiver Michael Zarutskie accounted for both of the scores on throws from senior quarterback Gio Cozza, including a 71-yard connection in the third quarter. Zarutskie finished with seven receptions for a game-high 114 yards.
Morrisville (2-0) at Pequea Valley (2-0), 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs had high expectations entering the season and it's been so far, so good, indeed.
Last week, Class A Morrisville upended Class 4A Columbia Montour Vo-Tech (District Four) 46-20 by piling up 335 rushing yards in an explosive performance.
Senior running back Raymond Holman led the way in the win over the Rams with 224 yards and four touchdowns on just 17 carries. Through two games, Holman has run for 406 yards and six scores on only 28 attempts (a whopping 14.5 yards per carry).
Teammate Shakur Dismukes chipped in with 71 rushing yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.
The Bulldogs now face a Class 3A program in the Braves (District Three) that has yet to allow a point.
Pequea Valley, which was just 2-8 last year, blanked 1-1 Jenkintown 35-0 a week ago after shutting out 0-2 Renaissance Academy 49-0 in its opener.
Quakertown (0-2) at North Penn (2-0), 7 p.m.
A year ago, the visiting Panthers drubbed the Knights 38-17 with a dominating total-team effort on North Penn's home field.
The two return to Crawford Stadium again with a Quakertown side looking for its first win and a North Penn team that has been ultra-impressive in the early going.
The Panthers, who lost to Southern Lehigh in their opener, had a 7-0 lead over Pennsbury last week before their offense stalled in what ended up as a 17-7 loss.
Senior Aiden Whiteley highlighted things for Quakertown by scoring a touchdown and rushing for a team-high 58 yards against the Falcons.
As for the Knights, they followed up a big win over tough Downingtown East in their opener by thumping Council Rock South 34-6 a week ago.
Junior quarterback Matt Bucksar threw a pair of touchdown passes in the win, including one to Matt Pownall. Pownall also rushed for a game-high 95 yards. Senior kicker Ryan Bocklet also connected on a pair of field goals of 27 and 41 yards.
Defensively, North Penn limited the Golden Hawks to under 200 yards of offense and just nine first downs.
Pennridge (1-1) at Harry S. Truman (1-1), 7 p.m.
The Rams snapped a five-game losing streak that dated back to last season with a 38-27 victory over Bensalem in Week Two.
Pennridge used a strong second half to get the win as the Rams, who were tied with the Owls at 20-20 at halftime, outscored Bensalem 18-7 over the final two quarters.
Junior quarterback Noah Keating led the way with 177 passing yards and three touchdowns while senior wide receiver Zach Swanson caught two of the touchdowns (34 and 65 yards) and finished with 113 receiving yards on three receptions.
Junior running back Ryan Rowe led the ground game for the Rams with a game-high 120 rushing yards to go along with touchdown runs of three, four and 14 yards.
As for the Tigers, who were 1-9 a year ago, they opened their season with a 42-0 win over Kensington before being edged by Abington 7-6 a week ago.
