FHSAA girls weightlifting: Bond-West, Manzueta set records for runner-up New Smyrna Beach

LAKELAND — New Smyrna Beach smashed several girls weightlifting state records Saturday, but came up a few points shy of its first team championship in program history.

The Barracudas produced three individual double champs — Mopelola Tofade, Olivia Bond-West and Asha-Mahri Manzueta — and finished second to regional rival Leesburg in the FHSAA championships at the RP Funding Center. The quartet of 'Cudas earned 24 points in Olympic and 26 points in traditional scoring.

New Smyrna Beach has been runner-up at the state meet on five occasions, including each of the last two years. Leesburg, a first-time champion, placed second in both 2019 and '20.

Sophomore Bond-West rewrote several FHSAA records for 183-pounders. She completed a 200-pound lift in the snatch, and a 260-pound attempt in the clean and jerk for an overall total score of 460.

“It’s a great achievement. It’s something I have been working so hard for all year,” Bond-West said. “It’s something expected, in a humble way. But I’ve still got more to work on. … I have numbers in my head that I want to hit by my senior year.”

Bond-West had a clean run on the bench press as well with three consecutive successes, maxing out at 200. Her identical 460 totals in Olympic and traditional were 70 and 150 pounds better than the field.

Asha-Mahri Manzueta, a junior, followed suit not long after in the 199-pound division. Manzueta set a new benchmark in the bench press on her first try at 310 pounds, upping the traditional total record to 540 — 30 pounds better than Ocoee’s Victoria Jefferson posted to win gold in 2017.

Manzueta topped out at 180 on the snatch for a 410 winning Olympic score.

“It’s an attitude of gratitude,” Manzueta said. “It’s insane from where I’ve come from. I didn’t think that I would be here. The work has come to fruition, and it’s not over.

“I’m not going to lie; I wanted to cry. I faced my share of adversity and have been told I would never hit that. It’s been a really long ride, and I want to do this for the rest of my life. It makes me emotional to think about the fact that I’ll be continuing this and there is so much still left for me to do in this sport.”

Mopelola Tofade rounded out a dominant morning flight for the Barracudas by sweeping the Olympic and traditional styles at 169 pounds. The senior hit her first two lifts in each of the three disciplines, resulting in a 140 in snatch, 195 in clean and jerk and 190 on the bench.

“I came out here and did what I needed to do. It was a fulfilling feeling, working on this for four years and putting in a countless amount of hours, waking up at very early times to come work out, staying late and doing cheerleading as well. I just really put my all out there,” Tofade said. “(My teammates) trusted me to win states, and I trusted them to win states. It’s such a great feeling that we all did our best.”

Tofade was one of four Volusia-Flagler 169-pounders to earn a place on the Class 2A podium. Deltona’s Payton Woerner placed sixth in Olympic (320 total), while Seabreeze’s Sofia James (350) and Matanzas’ Rilee Whitemore (345) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in traditional.

Franchesca Gonzalez, a senior 110-pounder, rounded out the scoring for New Smyrna Beach in the afternoon session. She placed second in traditional (295) and fourth in Olympic (260).

In Class 1A, Father Lopez junior Bergyn Baliton captured gold for the second straight season — this time in the 110-pound class, as opposed to 101.

Baliton stayed alive in the competition by hitting a 145 clean and jerk on her third and final attempt, and added a 125 on the bench to edge North Bay Haven’s Grace Masters by five pounds. She took second behind Masters in Olympic, recording a 255 total.

“The pressure, you just feel everything in that moment, especially when you are going for your first or third lift,” Baliton said. “My coaches and family in the audience really helped me.”

Taylor’s Amya Ramos secured two top-10 finishes in the 139-pound division, taking seventh in Olympic (285) and ninth in traditional (305). The Wildcats had two 110-pounders among the top-10 in traditional style — Taylor Lane in fifth (230) and Jocelyn Garcia (220) in 10th — and Teriauna Caruthers (270) was 10th in 169 Olympic.

Atlantic's Helena Perez (270/280) placed 10th in both Olympic and traditional in the 129 class, and Kindsay Ingram (175) finished eighth in 101 Olympic.
