Fever need Caitlin Clark to be more aggressive: 'Minimum 15 shots a game for us.'

SEATTLE -- Caitlin Clark is a passer at heart.

She has elite floor vision, and she knows how to get the ball to her teammates before they even know they're open. She's famous for her unique behind-the-back and no-look passes, and that type of play can muddle defenses easily.

There's a catch: Halfway through her rookie season, Clark has also quickly become the Fever's best scorer. So when she prioritizes setting up her teammates, she's not taking enough shots herself. But it's difficult for the Fever rookie when she's constantly double-teamed, forcing her to kick the ball out to a teammate for a better look.

"I could definitely be a little bit more aggressive to the basket, but I'm also trying to take what the defense is giving me," Clark said. "I try to set my teammates up successfully."

Clark took just nine shots in the Fever's 89-77 loss to Seattle on Thursday night, marking the second straight game she took less than 12 shots.

She took seven of her shots in the first half, pocketing 12 points in the first 20 minutes. Only two of her shots came in the second, and she finished the game with 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field.

"Caitlin Clark needs to shoot a minimum of 15 shots a game for us," Sides said. "She's got to get shots. We got to do a better job of setting her up, setting some really good screens for her to get open. The way she's getting guarded is tough, because she's getting shredded. So, once the ball is out of her hands, she's setting up the rest of our team for some really great looks."

While Sides set that minimum on Thursday night, it seems to be a new requirement for the Fever rookie. Clark has taken 15 shots or more in a game just six times in the Fever's 20 games, with none of them coming in the last seven games.

Against Chicago last Sunday, Clark set a single-game franchise record of 13 assists. But she took two shots in the final six minutes of the game, and the Sky went on an 18-5 run in that time, taking a one-point victory. On Thursday, Clark set up her teammates for buckets seven times.

Sides has previously said that she calls some plays in-game, with the point guard — whether it be Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, or Erica Wheeler bringing the ball up the floor — calling some. Eventually, something will have to give — either Sides will need to call plays specifically for the Fever rookie, or Clark will need to be a little more selfish with the ball.

“I think sometimes she’s being a little too unselfish," Sides said on Tuesday. "...I think she turns down some shots. I’d like her to take some shots that, when she comes off, she knows she has the green light.”
