FAMU baseball standout, two-time champion Ty Hanchey earns MLB shot after storied career
Off to the big leagues for Florida A&M baseball catcher Ty Hanchey.
Following the 2023 MLB Draft on Tuesday, the Virginia Beach native signed a free-agent contract to play for the San Francisco Giants.
Hanchey's signing comes on the heels of participating in the Inaugural HBCU Swingman Classic last Friday in Seattle during MLB All-Star Weekend.
The last FAMU player selected in the MLB Draft was first baseman Aubrey McCarty in 2017 when he was chosen in the 26th round by the Colorado Rockies.

Hanchey recently helped the Rattlers win the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Championship over Bethune-Cookman last May to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Gainesville Regional.
Though FAMU fell to eventual Men's College World Series runner-ups Florida and tenth-ranked UConn by three runs apiece, Hanchey became the first player in program history to be named to an NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team. He also notched 2023 All-SWAC First Team honors.
Prior to his 2022 arrival to FAMU, Hanchey assisted fellow NCAA Division I HBCU Norfolk State in winning the 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament Championship.
Hanchey tallied a .352 batting average, 76 hits, and 11 homeruns for FAMU during the 2022-2023 season.
