FAMU baseball defeats Eastern Illinois in opening day game of four-game series

The Florida A&M Rattlers took a 3-0 lead in the third inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 6-5 win against the Eastern Illinois Panthers on Friday.

Senior Caleb Granger (1-0) got the win for FAMU (1-0). The right-hander went six shutout innings, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out four.

In the batter's box, the Rattlers were led by junior Jakoby Stanley, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Senior Jalen Niles put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with two doubles. Freshman Broedy Poppell also contributed for FAMU, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

The Rattlers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. FAMU scored three times, picking up one on an RBI base knock off the bat of Poppell.

The Rattlers then held the Panthers scoreless before expanding their lead in the fifth inning. FAMU picked up two runs, including one on a solo dinger off the bat of Stanley, which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Rattlers.

FAMU held EIU without a run before building their lead to 6-0 the following inning. The Rattlers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Josue Figueroa. Eastern Illinois put five runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but FAMU still held on for the 6-5 win.

TROY, ALABAMA ― The FAMU Rattlers were not able to score a run against Indiana pitcher senior Macy Montgomery on Friday in the 8-0 loss to the Hoosiers.

Junior Samantha Smith (0-3) started and took the loss in the circle for FAMU (0-6).

Junior Brianna Duggins led the way offensively for the Rattlers, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame.

FAMU managed one chance with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position. The Rattlers last got a runner on third in the second, when sophomore Neriah Lee made it 60 feet away from scoring with one out.
