It's been a busy week for the Falcons. Not only did Atlanta play its first preseason game, a 20-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins, but the team suffered four severe injuries in the process. First, wide receiver Rondale Moore was lost for the season during joint practices in Miami.

Then, safety DeMarcco Hellams, cornerback Harrison Hand and linebacker Bralen Trice each went down during Friday's preseason opener. Three of the four players are now on the injured reserve list and the Falcons have already made a handful of roster transactions to compensate for these losses.

In today's recap, a Pro Bowl safety works out for Atlanta, one of the NFL's top pass rushers requests a trade, and we look at the team's latest roster moves.

1. DeMarcco Hellams injury update

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris finally gave fans the news they've been waiting for on Monday morning. Morris revealed that safety DeMarcco Hellams has a severe ankle injury that will keep him off the field for some time. Hellams was carted off the field during the first quarter of Friday's game against the Dolphins, leaving fans to assume the worst. Even if Hellams is out for a bit, the team appears to have dodged a bullet with him not landing on the injured reserve list. Hellams thrived last season as the team's third safety behind Jessie Bates and Richie Grant.

2. Pro Bowl safety works out for Falcons

With Hellams sitting out for an unknown amount of time, the Falcons will need some help at safety this season. Richie Grant is already on somewhat shaky ground and it appears the team is looking to bring in a veteran. According to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Atlanta is planning to work out Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons on Monday and Tuesday. Simmons made the Pro Bowl in 2023 and has racked up an impressive 30 interceptions over his eight NFL seasons. The Broncos released him over the offseason and he remains on the free-agent market. Pairing Simmons with Bates in the secondary would be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks.

3. EDGE Haason Reddick requests trade

The Falcons need help at outside linebacker after placing rookie Bralen Trice on the injured reserve list. Jets star edge rusher Haason Reddick may be available after Monday's reports that he officially requested a trade from New York. The Jets acquired Reddick from the Eagles for a conditional third-round pick at the start of the offseason but the two sides have been unable to get a long-term extension done. Reddick has one year left on his deal. Since Atlanta did little to address the outside linebacker position in free agency, Reddick would be a home-run addition.

4. Falcons to sign veteran DB

The Falcons may be working out Justin Simmons, but Josh Thompson already appears to have a contract. According to a report from NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the team is expected to add the veteran defensive back to its 90-man roster. While Thompson could help fill in for Hellams on special teams, his presence in no way rules out a potential Simmons signing. Thompson, 25, appeared in six games for the Tennessee Titans in 2022, primarily as a special-teams gunner.

5. Falcons sign Jakeem Grant, Spencer Brown

The Falcons signed three players to their 90-man training camp roster on Sunday evening. Pro Bowl kick wide receiver/kick returner Jakeem Grant and veteran running back Spencer Brown officially joined the team while quarterback Nathan Rourke was released. Atlanta signed quarterback John Paddock, who originally signed with the team following the 2024 NFL draft. Grant can add something to the return game and help replace injured receiver Rondale Moore.
