Everything OC Collin Klein and DC Jay Bateman said ahead of Texas A&M's Week 11 Bye Week
Texas A&M (7-2, 5-1 SEC) is headed into the second bye week of the season, just two days after falling to South Carolina 44-20 in the most lopsided loss of the season and the first SEC loss of the year after reeling off seven consecutive wins.
While the Aggies can technically afford to drop two games regarding the 12-team College Football Playoff, Saturday's loss did damage their odds. At the same time, the news that starting running back Le'Veon Moss will miss the rest of the season certainly added to the pain.
However, with winnable games vs. New Mexico State and Auburn over the next three weeks before hosting Texas, the Aggies are in a good position to land one of the 12 playoff spots. On Monday, head coach Mike Elko spoke to the local media, reflecting on the loss while looking forward to finishing strong this season despite facing tremendous adversity.
Joining Elko, OC Collin Klein and DC Jay Bateman also answered questions from the media. Here is what both assistant coaches had to say.
Jay Bateman on the Aggie's tackling issues against South Carolina
"Some of those were pressures, and when they miss, the stress on the rest of the coverage is emphasized."
"That will be a huge point of emphasis after watching Saturday's tape."
Bateman on the Aggies' recent penalty issues
"It's part of the game. We spent time in preseason camp talking to them about it. These guys will have a chance to play in the NFL, and it's emphasized there… Where they hit them matters."
Bateman on safety Dalton Brooks' progress this season
"Tremendous. All the NFL scouts ask about #25. He has natural athleticism about him. I have seen him improve a ton as a leader… He is a really good player. Proud of that kid."
Bateman on the defense "getting back to the basics"
"The minute you say, 'We're good.' That's when you get embarrassed. As a coach, you constantly see things and try to fix them. Our kids see it… It's getting back to the basics of playing defensive football."
The Week 11 bye week came at a perfect time
"Bye weeks are always appreciated at this point for health reasons. We have guys who are dinged up and can use a break."
Collin Klein on QB Marcel Reed's start against South Carolina
"The messaging to them and the whole unit is all of us in this thing together. One day at a time."
"I thought Marcel (Reed) did a nice job competing… Made some good plays in the passing game."
Klein on how he'll handle the quarterbacks this week
"It's how we, as a staff, piece it together based on what we see from the defense. There is some overlap. Both have unique strengths."
"When you have a position where you have two contrasting styles of player, thinking about the past, one could get hurt. You always have to be ready to adapt on the fly."
Klein on the offense looks against South Carolina
"We were more efficient at times. Jabre (Barber) did a nice job in the slot. We are closer to getting more explosive plays down the field. We will have to do that to help ourselves.
"It's never just one thing. It's the offense coming together and allowing those plays to be made."
Klein an QB Marcel Reed's mentality
"(Marcel Reed) is a competitor. All the guys in the locker room are."
"The process-based approach from coach (Elko) will win the day… There is no magic potion. It's day-in and day-out work that makes the difference."
Klein on A&M's running back room after Le'Veon Moss's season ending injury
"I have great faith in Amari (Daniels) and EJ (Smith) to do the same things (Le'Veon Moss would do).
"Credit South Carolina. I think they did a good job of taking away our edges."
Klein on what went wrong offensively vs. South Carolina
"I think there have been issues in different games at different times. In this game, it was our inability to stay on the field."
Klein on how he feels the team will respond after the loss
Klein on the imprortance of staying modest and avoiding positive press clippings
"The higher you get on the mountain, the further your eyes have to stay down… The teams I have been a part of that have done that, it's worked."
Klein on the emergence of WR Jabre Barber, who led the Aggies in receiving yards against South Carolina
"He has done a really nice job of working hard in practice. He's made some tough man-to-man catches and had yards after a catch. His consistency has been really big."
"That kid, we have to tell him to slow down in walkthrough. He is always chomping at the bit. Proud of him."
Klein on QB Conner Weigman as a strong presense in the locker room
"Conner (Weigman) has been an exemplary teammate. Both (Conner and Marcel Reed) those guys are in it for the right reasons. Both have been there for each other."
