Everything to know about Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers head coach
For NFL fans, the name Kyle Shanahan is familiar as he has been a successful offensive coach in the league for most of the past two decades.
The last name Shanahan is well known, too, because Kyle's father, Mike, won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos and was the offensive coordinator in San Francisco the last time the 49ers held the Lombardi Trophy in 1994.
Kyle Shanahan, 44, will try to join his father in an exclusive club when the 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58. The 49ers, who are making their eighth appearance in the Super Bowl, are also seeking revenge against the Chiefs, having lost Super Bowl 54 in 2020.
Here is everything to know about Kyle Shanahan:
Kyle Shanahan coaching career
Shanahan started as a graduate assistant at UCLA in 2003 after graduating from the University of Texas, before becoming an offensive assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following year. He has coached with the Houston Texans and Washington Commanders, and was the offensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and Atlanta Falcons in 2015-16.
He was hired as the 49ers head coach one day after the Falcons lost in Super Bowl 51.
Kyle Shanahan with Atlanta Falcons
As offensive coordinator of the Falcons in 2016, Shanahan guided the team to one of the best offenses in recent memory, as Atlanta ranked first in points scored and second in offensive yards. Quarterback Matt Ryan was named the league's MVP and Shanahan won the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year award.
In Super Bowl 51, Atlanta raced out to a 28-3 lead against the New England Patriots only to blow the lead and lose in overtime, 34-28, marking the biggest collapse in Super Bowl history. Shanahan's 49ers also blew a 10-point fourth-quarter lead to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 54, and were outscored 21-0 in the fourth before losing 31-20.
"There’s been a lot of good things, but the ultimate goal, we always say it, there’s only one team happy at the end of the year," Shanahan said earlier this week. "We’re real proud of a lot of things that we’ve accomplished here in the last five years or so. We still want to be that one team that’s happy. No matter what you accomplish, if you don’t win that Super Bowl, it’s always disappointing."
Kyle Shanahan coaching record
In seven seasons with the 49ers, Shanahan has a 64-51 record, with eight more victories coming in the postseason. His teams have won three division titles and ranked in the top five in offensive yards in four of the past five years.
