England squad LIVE: Lee Carsley makes first announcement as four uncapped players selected
Lee Carsley has turned to youth to kick off his reign as England’s interim manage by picking the uncapped Angel Gomes, Tino Livramento, Morgan Gibbs-White and Noni Madueke.
But there were no places for Marcus Rashford, James Maddison or Kyle Walker, while Kieran Trippier has retired from international football and Jude Bellingham is injured.
Carsley also brought back Jack Grealish, who was dropped by former manager Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024, along with Harry Maguire, who was ruled out of the tournament with injury, and Nick Pope.
And Carsley has given recalls to Rico Lewis and Levi Colwill, who have each only won one senior cap, as the Under-21 manager looks to the next generation.

Lee Carsley:
“It was important putting my stamp on the squad but recognising how well they have done in the past. We are coming off the back of losing in a final, I feel the squad need that little injection of energy and enthusiasm.
“Looking at the squad I have picked today, I have worked with the majority, whether assisting the 21s before or currently so it was important to get players around who understand how I work.”

Morgan Gibbs-White ‘very exciting’ for England
14:45 , Jamie Braidwood
Lee Carsley on Morgan Gibbs-White, who was a key player for him during England’s victory at the Under-21 Euros two summers ago.
“Morgan is a very attacking player, full of energy and very exciting. He has an excellent work rate and is very difficult to play against.
“He’s been successful with England Under-21s. A lot of these players that we brought in are used to winning and going to the latter stages of tournaments.”
Ben White ‘unavailable’ for England selection
14:30 , Jamie Braidwood
Finally, Lee Carsley confirms that Arsenal’s Ben White remains “unavailable” for England selection. The right back has not played for England since leaving the World Cup camp in 2022.
Lee Carsley on Marcus Rashford and James Maddison omissions
14:26 , Jamie Braidwood
On Marcus Rashford and James Maddison, Lee Carsley says players are “ahead of them” as it stands but they will still be under consideration for future squads.
He adds: “I don’t think this is going to be the squad (next month)” - so there will be opportunities for players to win their places back.
‘People are going to really be excited to see Angel Gomes’
14:22 , Jamie Braidwood
Lee Carsley on Angel Gomes, who has thrived at Lille after leaving Manchester United.
“Angel’s very technical, controls the game with his skill and technique. Very determined, excellent attitude. Technically and tactically excellent. I think he’s a player that people are going to really be excited to see”
Lee Carsley on future of dropped players like Kyle Walker
14:15 , Jamie Braidwood
Carsley says no player has been “ruled out” of future squads if they’ve not been named in his first one. He says he wanted to pick players who have featured this season and are in form.
“I think the fact that Kyle hasn’t played this season would suggest that Manchester City are phasing him in slowly,” he said.
“It’s important that players coming in are up to speed and that they’re ready to play. I would say 98% of the squad have played a lot of minutes.”
Lee Carsley confirms Trent Alexander-Arnold position
14:14 , Jamie Braidwood
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been named as a defender in the squad list, while he was named as a midfielder under Gareth Southgate and at Euro 2024.
Lee Carsley confirms Alexander-Arnold will play at right back in the next two games for England.
Lee Carsley explains England selections
14:10 , Jamie Braidwood
Lee Carsley has named five players from his England Under-21s team. He says he wanted to put his “own mark on the squad” and describes Morgan Gibbs-White and Angel Gomes as exciting players to watch, who deserve their call-ups.
He says Kyle Walker was not selected because he is yet to play for Manchester City this season and is being eased back following the Euros. Carsley says the majority of the squad have played regularly over the first two weeks of the season.
Carsley adds: “It’s important to also recognise how well (England) done in the past. We’ve come so close (to winning a trophy) but I thought it was important to put some fresh faces in the squad.”
14:03 , Jamie Braidwood
Angel Gomes and Morgan Gibbs-White starred in the side who won the European Under-21 Championships for Lee Carsley in 2023, as did defender Levi Colwill plus Cole Palmer.
Meanwhile, Noni Madueke gets his first England call-up, four days after scoring a hat-trick in Chelsea’s 6-2 thrashing of Wolves.
Of the Euro 2024 squad, Ivan Toney, Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Aaron Ramsdale and Adam Wharton are also omitted but Grealish is recalled, though only played 19 minutes for Manchester City this season.

Jude Bellingham an injury doubt for England games
13:29 , Jamie Braidwood
Jude Bellingham is a doubt for England’s games against Ireland and Finland next week after the Real Madrid midfielder suffered a leg injury in training.
Reports in Spain suggest the 21-year-old will not be available until after the international break and a statement from Real Madrid released last Friday read:
“Following tests carried out today on Jude Bellingham by Real Madrid’s medical team, the player has been diagnosed with an injury to the plantaris muscle in his right leg.
“His progress will be monitored.”
He was not in the Real Madrid squad that beat Valladolid at the weekend.

13:24 , Jamie Braidwood
So we know one England veteran from the Gareth Southgate era is not in the squad in Kieran Trippier - how about the likes of Harry Maguire and Kyle Walker?
Walker, 34, has been on the bench for Manchester City’s opening two games of the season, while Maguire missed the Euros in the summer and was replaced, impressively, by Marc Guehi.
Walker has insisted that he intends to continue his international career but Rico Lewis, his Manchester City team-mate, is a contender for his place.

Kieran Trippier retires from international football before England squad announcement
12:42 , Alex Pattle
Kieran Trippier has retired from international football, ahead of Lee Carsley’s first England squad announcement as interim coach.
Trippier represented the Three Lions 54 times at senior level, reaching the final of Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 – with England losing both games.
The Newcastle full-back announced his international retirement on social media on Thursday (29 August), two hours before Carsley will name his first squad since replacing Gareth Southgate.
“I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country, let alone achieve 54 caps,” wrote Trippier, 33, on Instagram.
“It’s been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at 4 major tournaments. I want to say a big thank you to Gareth and all the staff that have worked with the England squad for the trust they have placed in me throughout the years.
“Thank you to all my team mates - we have had some very special moments reaching 2 Euro finals, and a World Cup semi final, and I am sure in the future this group of players will win a major tournament.
“I want to wish Lee, the coaching staff and the team all the best for the future. And finally a big thank you to all the England fans for your incredible support travelling all over the world to support us and keeping us going in the difficult moments.”

England’s Nations League group
12:40 , Jamie Braidwood
England will return to the Nations League to find themselves in League B for the first time, after they were relegated from League A in 2022.
Gareth Southgate’s side faced Germany, Hungary and Italy but finished bottom of the group without a single win in six games - including a 4-0 defeat to Hungary at Wolverhampton.
The Three Lions will face the Republic of Ireland, Greece and Finland across six matchdays between September and November this year.
Topping the group would see England automatically promoted back to League A, whilst the runners-up in League B also have the chance to play home-and-away matches between the third-ranked teams in League A for another shot at promotion.
Who is Lee Carsley? England choose Under-21s boss as interim
12:20 , Jamie Braidwood
Lee Carsley has replaced Gareth Southgate to become the next England manager, on an interim basis.
Carsley has stepped in on a temporary basis, giving the FA valuable time until a bigger name emerges either later this year or next summer.
Carsley may appear to be a surprise option, but Southgate managed the under-21s between 2013 and 2016 before graduating to the role of senior boss.
The 50-year-old was in negotiations to become the Republic of Ireland manager last year but decided to remain in charge of the under-21s for one more cycle.

Harvey Elliott?
Another Euros winner who played reguarly under Carsley for the England Under-21s, Elliott was tipped to make England’s Euro 2024 squad at the end of last season but narrowly missed out. The Liverpool midfielder hasn’t started either Premier League game under new boss Arne Slot, however.

11:40 , Jamie Braidwood
Noni Madueke?
There is a lot of competition among the wide forward positions, but Madueke is in form after hitting a stunning hat-trick for Chelsea in the 6-2 win at Wolves last weekend. Another star of Carsley’s Under-21 team, he is an outside contender to receive his first senior call-up.

Morgan Gibbs-White?
Gibbs-White played a starring role for Carsley as England won the Under-21 Euros two summers ago, which was followed by another impressive season for Nottingham Forest. He’s been close to a call-up before, will it arrive now with a change of England manager?

11:02 , Jamie Braidwood
Tino Livramento?
We could see several players used by Carsley in the Under-21s named in today’s senior squad, including Newcastle’s right back Tino Livramento. He’s already taken the place of Kieran Trippier at club level, could he do the same on the international scene?

Ben White?
The Arsenal defender has not been in an England squad since leaving the 2022 World Cup, amid reports of a row with Gareth Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland.
Southgate said he was open to White returning to England and said his international future was in his hands, but the right back did not return ahead of the Euros.
The situation is not expected to change now Carsley is in charge.

James Maddison?
A poor second half of the season cost Maddison as he was cut from England’s squad before the Euros. He recently told Sky Sports that he “struggled to find the consistency second half of last season post injury” - it may be a bit early to say he’s back firing, but there’s more room in midfield for a creator like Maddison, especially if Bellingham is injured.

Jack Grealish?
He’d certainly love the chance to play against Ireland next month, but Grealish has played just 20 minutes for Manchester City this season and that doesn’t look enough to get a recall after being cut from Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.
But England’s left-side was a problem during the Euros, so perhaps Carsley looks to Grealish for natural width?

Marcus Rashford?
Perhaps the biggest omission from England’s Euro 2024 squad, but not a surprising one given his form for Manchester United last season. There hasn’t been time for Rashford to prove he’s turned a corner at club level and it’s not as if he’s hit the ground running this season after having a summer off.
It looks unlikely that the 26-year-old will return.

Raheem Sterling?
The top scorer for England under Gareth Southgate after Harry Kane, Sterling has not played for the Three Lions since the 2022 World Cup.
Given that he’s been frozen out at Chelsea, with his future uncertain ahead of the transfer deadline, it looks very unlikely that Sterling would return under Carsley.
Who makes Lee Carsley’s England squad?
09:18 , Jamie Braidwood
It’s been 45 days since England lost to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 - and Lee Carsley’s squad is expected to be similar to the one that reached the final in Germany under Gareth Southgate.
It goes without saying that captain Harry Kane will be selected, as well as the spine of the England team from Euro 2024: Jordan Pickford, John Stones, Declan Rice, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka. Jude Bellingham is a fitness doubt after suffering an injury at Real Madrid.
But we could see plenty of new faces from there...
England interim manager Lee Carsley axes Gareth Southgate’s long-serving analysts
08:39 , Jamie Braidwood
England interim manager Lee Carsley is shaping his backroom staff ahead of his first match in charge of the national side and has let go two of Gareth Southgate’s long-serving analysts.
Mike Baker and Stephen O’Brien were the lead performance analysts under former England boss Southgate but will not have a role in the next senior men’s camp as Carsley has promoted Under-21s analyst James Ryder to work alongside him.
Baker and O’Brien, who are both employed full-time with the Football Association, will not lose their jobs in the analyst department but they are now excluded from the England’s manager’s close circle following eight years working under Southgate.
Who is Lee Carsley? England choose Under-21s boss as interim manager to succeed Gareth Southgate
08:38 , Jamie Braidwood
Lee Carsley has replaced Gareth Southgate to become the next England manager, on an interim basis.
Southgate stepped down after the crushing defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 and speculation immediately spread with the FA assessing a number of options and initially eager to make a quick appointment before choosing to take their time to ensure the correct decison.
It means that a few weeks after that final loss in Germany, Carsley – the England Under-21 manager – has been put in charge for the Three Lions’ upcoming Nations League matches and is perhaps the surprise candidate to take the role permanently.

Interim boss Lee Carsley ponders first squad selection as England enter new era
08:38 , Jamie Braidwood
Lee Carsley has plenty to ponder ahead of selecting his first England squad as interim manager on Thursday.
The Euro 2024 runners-up are entering a new era after Gareth Southgate called time on his eight-year reign following July’s deflating final defeat to Spain.
The Football Association’s recruitment process for his permanent successor continues, leading England Under-21s boss Carsley to be temporarily promoted to oversee the senior team.
The 50-year-old will speak to the media on Thursday for the first time since taking the reins, when he names his squad for September’s Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
Carsley has been lined up to lead England in all six autumn internationals and announces his first selection just 46 days after the Euro 2024 final and 20 days after being placed in charge.
